How can I use my high school to support me in exploring my career paths ?

Advocacy and resource tips.

Thank you comment icon High schools offer various resources for career exploration. The guidance office serves as a primary hub, providing access to internship information, job shadowing programs, and partnerships with local businesses. These resources offer practical insights into professional environments. Participation in school clubs and electives allows for low-risk testing of different fields. Joining a robotics team or a debate club helps build technical and soft skills. Furthermore, advocating for specific career-focused projects within a classroom setting can foster deeper engagement with a subject. Building professional relationships with educators and counselors is also beneficial, as these individuals can provide guidance and letters of recommendation for future opportunities. Clarence

High school is a great time to explore career paths! Start by talking to your school counselor; they can help you find resources like career assessments, internships, or job shadowing opportunities. Join clubs or organizations related to your interests, like business, art, or STEM, to gain hands-on experience. Take advantage of elective classes that align with potential careers, such as marketing, graphic design, or computer science. If your school offers dual enrollment or AP courses, use them to explore fields you’re curious about while earning college credit. Lastly, don’t be afraid to reach out to teachers or alumni for advice; they can offer valuable insights and connections!

Hi Daniel I hope you are doing fine😊
It's great to know that you're already thinking of a career path.
One helpful way to discover a career that suits you is by working with your school guidance counsellor.
🫴Visit your school guidance counsellor and take part in a career assessment.
👌Additionally, whenever your school is on a break try volunteering in places /organizations that interests you in the fields that you are curious about.
🤔Take time to reflect on your experiences and combine with your counselling/career assessment outcome. Be open minded as interests and passion could change with age and time.
Since you are still in the high school, you have the opportunity to keep exploring until you find what truly matches your, interest, abilities and potentials.

Daniel, the sky is your starting point and I believe you'll make a right choice of career 🎉

Thank you for your question. Below are my suggestions :
1. Think about what careers you have interest first. Think about what you have interest, e.g. your hobbies, favourite subjects, etc. and identify the related careers
E.g. If you like music, would you like to be a singer, musician, musical artist, music producer, music producer, etc.
If you have interest in maths, would you like to be an engineer, accountant, banker, financial analyst, maths teacher, etc.
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your teachers, school career counsellor, etc.
4. Attend information sessions of relevant subjects in colleges and identify the entry criteria
5. Select the relevant subjects in your high school courses and work hard on your academic to meet the entry criteria of colleges
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Hi Daniel, great question! Your high school can actually be one of your best resources for exploring career paths if you know how to tap into what's available. First, I'd say start with your school counselor because they can connect you with career assessments, college prep resources, and sometimes even local internship or job shadowing opportunities you didn't know existed. From my own experience, I started out studying engineering and even did a semester abroad during college, and honestly that curiosity to explore started way before college. If your school offers electives, AP classes, or dual enrollment courses in areas you're interested in, take advantage of those because they give you a real taste of what a subject is like before you commit to it. Also, look into any clubs, competitions, or extracurriculars that align with what you're curious about, whether that's robotics, business, coding, or anything else. Another big one is asking your teachers and counselors if they know professionals in fields you're interested in because even a quick informational interview can teach you so much. I've worked across supply chain, consulting, tech, and data science throughout my career, and each step built on skills I started developing early on, things like problem solving, teamwork, and just being willing to learn new tools and technologies. If your school has a career center or hosts career fairs, show up and ask questions because that's how you start building a network even before college. And don't sleep on certifications or online courses either, many of those resources are free or low cost and totally accessible while you're still in high school. The key is to advocate for yourself, ask for what you need, and treat every class and activity as a chance to figure out what excites you most. You've got this!

Your high school has more resources than you might think, but you need to take some initiative to use them. Start by talking to your counselor and be open about your interests. They can help you choose classes that fit your goals and tell you about career programs, internships, job shadowing, or dual enrollment opportunities you might not know about otherwise.

Explore clubs, electives, and teachers as resources too. If you are interested in areas like healthcare, business, or technology, join related clubs or ask teachers if they know of any outside opportunities. Teachers can be great contacts, and if you show interest, they often go the extra mile to help you find programs, competitions, or people to connect with in that field. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or say, "I'm trying to figure out my path, do you have any advice?"

To get what you need, you have to speak up. If your school doesn't offer something you're interested in, ask about options like online courses, independent study, or local programs. Keep an eye on your school website, bulletin boards, and emails for opportunities, as many go unnoticed.

To explore your career path, I think there are 2 questions that you need to answer: What am I good at? What am I passionate about? You will likely pursue a career that fits into either of those buckets and, maybe both. I'm passionate about a lot of things but what I'm really good at is storytelling, building relationships with people and adapting to different situations. These traits have made me successful in management consulting. While you are in high school, there is no reason why you can't start exploring how you will answer these questions? Think about what the classes are that you most enjoy. Are there specific assignments that you love vs. others that you do not. Are there areas, such as sports or arts, that you really love. While you may not make a living as an elite athlete or an artist, there are likely things about that environment or those specific interests that can tell you about what you like to do and what you are good at. The other great thing about high school is that you can try all sorts of different activities. You should experiment, get out of your comfort zone, and try a variety of different activities and subjects. Only through getting outside your comfort zone will you really grow and learn more about yourself. Best of luck and great questions!

Samantha’s Answer

Great question, Daniel. It's wonderful that you are already thinking about your future and asking how to explore your options.

Your high school can be a great place to start if you take advantage of what is around you. Talk with your school counselor about your interests and ask about classes, career assessments, or pathways that might be a good fit. Join clubs, sports, or activities to see what you enjoy and to build useful skills. Go to career days, listen to guest speakers, and look for internships or job shadow opportunities your school offers. Teachers are also a great resource, so do not hesitate to ask them about careers connected to what you are learning in class.

Keep asking questions, stay curious, and give yourself the space to explore what interests you. Wishing you lots of success as you figure out what excites you and where you want to go next.

Taking a Career Exploration or Career Development class in high school can be really helpful if your school offers it. This class gives you time to learn about the skills and education needed for many different jobs. It helps you figure out how your own skills, talents, and interests can turn your career dreams into reality.
