How can I reach out to ABA centers for a practicum internship as a student based in Georgia?
Hello! I'm in an online ABA program that requires me to gain some fieldwork hours through a practicum course. Most centers are either out of my radius (I am based in Atlanta) or they are only in-home therapy opportunities; however, I don’t have a car.

Hi Jamie,
You're actually closer than you think; in a sector like ABA, where many jobs aren't publicly publicised, this stage is more about aggressively creating your opportunity than it is about finding the "perfect listing."
Direct outreach is the most successful strategy. Make a list of ABA centers in Atlanta and begin contacting them directly instead of waiting for postings. Although they don't always make it obvious, many centers welcome practicum students. When communicating, make sure your message is clear and purposeful:
- Briefly introduce yourself and your ABA program
- Mention that you’re seeking supervised fieldwork/practicum hours
- Highlight that you’re flexible (in-clinic, in-home, part-time)
- Ask if they accept students or can point you in the right direction
Many students find placements by being referred elsewhere, even if they don't have space.
Don't write off in-home therapy just yet. It may seem less organised than clinic-based work, but because you see behaviour in real-life settings, it's actually very beneficial for ABA. This could greatly increase your possibilities and help you accumulate hours more quickly because you own a car. You ought to make use of:
- Your program coordinator or practicum advisor (they often have partner sites or past student placements)
- Classmates or alumni from your program
- Local professional groups or online communities related to ABA
A simple strategy that works well:
- Reach out to 5–10 centers per week
- Track responses and follow up after a few days
- Stay open to different formats (clinic + in-home mix)
One helpful mindset change is to focus on quality monitoring and completion over convenience. It is more important to get your hours in a supportive environment than the actual location. You simply need to shift from passive searching to active outreach; you're not stuck. Finding practicum placements in this field usually starts at that stage.
Best wishes!
