If you could go back and do college again knowing what you know now about the path to biomedical engineering, anesthesiology, or the healthcare field in general what would you have done differently or prioritize differently to build a strong foundation to better prepare you for the field What is something you would go back and change to better set you up for success before even going into the healthcare field?

Hi! I am trying to become and anesthesiologist or biomedical engineer I have a strong interest in the healthcare field. I am nervous about starting my career because I know the Pre-med track is very demanding, but I would just like some tips on how to be well prepared for everything that comes with Pre-med. I am also majoring in Biology and science isn't one of my stronger subjects so any tips on how to properly study would be very appreciated.

Honestly, if I could go back I would have started building real world experience way earlier than I did. I spent a lot of time focused on just getting through classes and maintaining my GPA, which matters, but I wish I had been more intentional about shadowing, volunteering, and networking from my very first year. Those experiences teach you things that no textbook ever will and they also help you figure out sooner whether the path you are on is actually the right fit for you.
The other thing I would change is learning how to advocate for myself sooner, talking to professors during office hours, asking for research opportunities, and not being afraid to reach out to professionals in the field for informational interviews or shadowing. Most people are willing to help when you ask, but you have to be the one to take that first step.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much for your response!! Would you say you wish you would have gotten an internship your freshman year? And is that just an internship in the healthcare field so you can see which career path is the best for you? My parents also taught me asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a show of strength so I will definitely be more intentional about carrying that with me. Once again thank you so much for your insight it is very appreciated. Chelsea

Exploring different career paths in healthcare can be really exciting - I just wish i'd upskilled in this and how to explore/navigate/network and consider all the paths. Just like you'll have worked hard to pass your clinical exams, learn how you can also build skills in new areas - learn how to access and be excited by lifelong learning.
Honestly I wish I'd been more active in seeking career education, guidance and skills because its crucial now but particularly and for the future.
It's not a secret that the healthcare field can be challenging, but that's not to discourage you. By learning to advocate for yourself , network find different learning opportunities BEYOND uni and exploring non-traditional paths, you're more likely to find many ways to use your degree beyond what you learned at university. This approach can open up more opportunities and help you work towards enjoying a long and sustainable career.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much for your advice! How do you recommend finding different learning opportunities beyond University? And if science (bio/chemistry etc..) isn't one of your stronger subjects how would you recommend studying so you feel confident in the material or even get to the point where its now a strong subject Chelsea
