Hi Samuel, This is a very mature question. I'm drawing on my clinical rotation when I was in my twenties and my clinical rotation experience as a mature adult. First thing is to practice your poker face. It should be calm, confident and expressionless. Practice in your day to day experiences when the people you are interacting with are expecting an emotional (happy, excited, angry or sad) response from you. Practice this face when you are feeling those emotions and learn how people react to your demeanor. When you are in your clinical rotation, present this face when you smell something foul, see something that initially makes you ill or repulses you. Once you can control your facial expressions, then practice compassion with things you may not agree with or understand. You will interact with a variety of individual who are at different stages of their life or different from you and your experiences that you may not be able to relate to. It is your job to give them all the same good/outstanding care no matter their politeness or kindness towards you.
Be aware of your patient, see if their body language matches what they are telling you, observe and consider how they interact with their family, do you notice anything suttle that may help you, help your patient. Trust your instinct and intuition. Lastly, support your patient always. Don't be nice to them in the room, then gossip about them to others. This undermines your good judgement and will cause you to question your instincts for good patient care. Best of luck to you.
