Start looking now, especially if you can manage school and work. Possibly look for a summer internship. Something else that adds credibility to any future resume, I believe, is volunteer activities. If you haven't yet, look for some short-term opportunities (even just a couple of hours).

Hi Christopher,
Perfect timing for your question, most major companies are posting for their summer internships over the next few weeks. I find the majority of companies are typically looking at juniors, but there are some that consider sophomores. If you're unsuccessful in finding freshman level internships, I'd recommend gaining some experience with any on-campus opportunities over the summer, such as working at the local laboratory, admissions office, etc. to gain some skills in advance of a more formal internship.

It's a great idea to start looking into internship programs at different companies now. Some companies accept freshmen, while others prefer sophomores or juniors. Each company has its own schedule, but we usually choose interns in the Fall (September-October) for the next summer. It can be competitive, with lots of people applying, so try applying to many places. Once you find some companies you like, try to connect and network with someone who works there.
