Why Why Should I earn a nursing degree vs. a pre - med degree before attending medical school? I'm a high school senior who will be attending Oral Roberts University this fall.

Nursing and Medicine are two separate professions. If you want to go to Medical School, then by all means pursue the pre-med curriculum in college. Best of Luck!

Hi Alexander,
It's great that you want to pursue a career in healthcare! There is no need to get a nursing degree before medical school. The curriculum is completely different because the jobs and the skills that are needed are completely different. You won't even get the pre-requisites for med school covered if you go the nursing route. If you are torn between nursing and med school, I would recommend that you research the professions of physicians and nurses a bit more and get some experience shadowing or interning in medical settings.
Having said that, you CAN go to nursing school if you really want to have that as a backup career. People have done it and become successful doctors. Just understand that it will unnecessarily complicate your life, increase costs and prolong your (already long) education.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!
