What experiences beyond the classroom will most effectively prepare me to succeed in a competitive accounting field and discern the right career path within it?
I'm a first-year accounting major. I'm on a five-year program and hoping to graduate with a master's in accounting.

Hi Alexander,
I hope all is well! This is a great question! As a first year accounting major in a 5 year accounting masters program, experiences outside the classroom are what separate you from other students with similar coursework. Classes teach you the fundamentals, but internships, clubs, and real-world experience show you how accounting actually works such as with team collaboration, how deadlines are managed, and how decisions are made. These experiences also build practical skills like communication, attention to detail, and professionalism, which firms look for just as much as technical knowledge.
They also help you figure out which path in accounting is right for you. Early exposure to areas like audit, tax, or advisory lets you see what you enjoy and where you fit best rather than guessing when it’s time to apply. Starting now gives you a real advantage. It will help you build a stronger resume, a clearer story, and more confidence heading into internships and full time recruiting.
I hope this information helps you on your journey. Please reach out if you had any additional questions. Hope to talk soon!
Thank you,
Dwight

Hi Alexander,
Speaking from my own experience, searching for a job opportunity while i was still a student really helped me understand the professional landscape.
They might not be the highest-paying roles, but you gain hands-on experience that becomes a huge advantage when looking for your next move. It is also a great way to reinforce everything you are learning in your classes.
