What makes you stand out when applying for internships or jobs, and how can that be balanced while going to school?
I'm a senior in high school and I am moving from California to New York for college at LIM. I want to get internships for experience but would also like a job. I also would need tips on how people are balancing these things while going to school.

Aloha Kailey,
Try to seek out an internship in the filed that you will be studying in college that way your interests are there and you would have a bit of knowledge in that field already because of your direction of studies. Employers like to mentor those with the same concentration as their company. There are internship programs from companies that welcome individuals but they don't have an itinerary for learning business concepts and utilize the individuals as extras: filing, making copies, scanning, general office tasks. You want to be sure to get into an internship program that has goals, projects and duties that align with learning how the business is run. If they have a sales department-what are their concepts for teaching /closing sales. Is there customer service- how to they exercise it.
For you to stand out to be selected for the program, design your steps as in applying for a job:
-Resume: note accolades, school participation in programs, clubs, events.
-Cover letter: speak of how you would like to align your future employment endeavors with what their company may offer by mentioning something they do/offer showing your researched into their company.
-Follow up on your applications and find out who are the contact individuals.
As for balancing an internship while attending school, that will depend on the organization that offers the program. Most will be daily/business hours so if you are attending school it may be hard for your to commit. Look for summer internship programs
I hope this helps.
Good Luck,
