Hey Alice, Class 12 prep + college hunting is a whole sport 😅 You’ve picked two solid fields, and India has some really strong departments for both. Here’s the breakdown + real talk on DU and BHU.

Top Universities in India for Geography + Political Science
These schools consistently rank well, have active departments, and profs who are known in the field:

Best Overall/Central Universities
University Why it’s strong NIRF Rank 2026
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi JNU’s School of International Studies + Centre for Political Studies is the hub for Pol Sci/IR. Geography dept is research-heavy, great for UPSC/academia. Faculty includes many well-known authors. #2
Delhi University, Delhi Huge network of colleges. Pol Sci depts at Hindu, LSR, St. Stephen’s, Ramjas are legendary. Geography strong at Kirori Mal, Miranda House, Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Professors often write your DU textbooks. 11
Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi Old, respected Pol Sci + Geography depts. Very strong for classical political theory, public admin, and human geography. Campus culture is very academic. #5
Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi Great for Pol Sci with focus on international relations, public policy. Geography dept is also solid with good fieldwork. #3
Jadavpur University, Kolkata Pol Sci dept is known for critical theory & international politics. Geography is strong in environmental/urban studies. #4
Calcutta University, Kolkata One of India’s oldest Geography depts. Very strong in geomorphology, GIS. Pol Sci also solid. 12
Top DU Colleges Specifically for Your Subjects
If you go the DU route, college matters a lot. For BA (Hons) Political Science, a popular preference list students use is:

Lady Shri Ram College
Hindu College
St. Stephen’s College
Miranda House
... down to Indraprastha College at 10. The ranking is based on faculty quality, academic culture, societies, and exposure.
For BA (Hons) Geography, the DU standouts are:

Kirori Mal College – ₹50,450, Avg placement ₹5.4 LPA
Miranda House – ₹44,670–₹52,230, Avg placement ₹7 LPA
Indraprastha College for Women – ₹540, Avg placement ₹5.38 LPA
Shaheed Bhagat Singh College – ₹540

Feedback on Delhi University vs BHU
Delhi University – The Vibe

Pros: Unmatched exposure. You’re in Delhi, so seminars, think tanks, internships with MPs/NGOs, UPSC coaching hubs, and student politics are all next door. Professors are often leading scholars and many are public intellectuals. Societies like Pol Sci Assn, Geography field trips, and MUNs are very active.
Cons: HUGE class sizes in some colleges, so prof interaction depends on you. Admin can be slow. North Campus vs South Campus culture is real – North is more “academic/political”, South is more “chill”. For Geography, fieldwork opportunities are great but funding varies by college.
Student take: People often share DU preference lists because the college choice really shapes your experience. Also, note that 5 of the top 10 Pol Sci colleges in that list are women-only, which shapes campus dynamics.

Banaras Hindu University – The Vibe

Pros: Deeply academic atmosphere. BHU’s Pol Sci dept is known for political theory + Indian politics, and Geography for physical + human geography. Profs are dedicated and the campus is beautiful + self-contained. Cost of living is way lower than Delhi. Strong for students who want a traditional university experience + UPSC focus.
Cons: Less industry/NGO exposure vs Delhi. Varanasi isn’t a policy hub, so you’ll have to travel for internships. Admin moves at its own pace. Some say it’s more traditional in pedagogy.
Student take: BHU gets cited as a top geography institution and ranks #5 overall. Students value the dedicated faculty and research culture.

A few tips for choosing
Entrance: Most central unis now take CUET-UG for BA. DU, BHU, JMI, JNU all use it. Start CUET prep alongside boards.
Faculty > Brand: For PG/academia, check faculty profiles. Look up who’s publishing in Economic & Political Weekly, GeoJournal, etc. JNU + DU profs dominate there.
City matters: If you want internships in policy/IR/media, Delhi > Varanasi. If you want focused study + lower costs, BHU is excellent.
Other options: Ashoka University, Shiv Nadar University, and Azim Premji University have amazing Pol Sci/Geography depts too, but they’re private with higher fees.
