I find that LinkedIn is a great source for finding remote jobs as it is often listed in the description, which means you can also search for jobs not only in the specific field but also ones that are remote.

Hi Tammy,

Looking for remote IT support jobs can be exciting! Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

1. Use job boards with remote filters like Indeed, LinkedIn Jobs, and Glassdoor. They allow you to search for titles such as "IT Support Specialist," "Help Desk Technician," "Technical Support Analyst," or "Desktop Support" and filter by "Remote."

2. Check remote-only boards like We Work Remotely and Virtual Vocations. They focus on remote job listings and have specific categories for IT/tech support roles.

3. Try search terms like "IT support," "help desk," "technical support," "service desk analyst," and "desktop support technician." These are common titles for entry-level remote IT support positions.

4. A quick tip for Indeed: combine a job title with "l=Remote" in the search filters to find exclusively remote postings.

Good luck on your job search! You’ve got this!

Job title variations to search

IT Support roles get posted under a lot of different names. Search all of these:

IT Support Specialist / Technician
Help Desk Analyst / Technician / Support Specialist
Technical Support Representative / Engineer
Desktop Support Technician (sometimes remote, sometimes hybrid — check carefully)
Service Desk Analyst
Tier 1 / Tier 2 Support (common leveling language)
Systems Support Specialist
Customer Support Engineer (some SaaS companies use this for what's essentially IT support)

Finding a remote IT support role involves targeting the right job titles and search platforms. For example, you can try start by narrowing down your target job titles so search algorithms show you the right postings. Search for terms like Help Desk Technician, IT Support Specialist, Service Desk Analyst, and Remote Desktop Support Technician. You can also try searching for Application Support Analyst or Technical Support Specialist, as these roles often cover identical duties under a slightly different name.

When using major job platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed, type those titles into the main search box and explicitly set the location filter to "Remote" or "Work from Home." For specialized sites that focus purely on

Hello Tammy.

Where to Search for Jobs:

General Job Boards — Use LinkedIn or Indeed and set the location filter to "Remote" to find flexible opportunities.
Remote-Specific Boards — Sites like We Work Remotely, Remote.co, or FlexJobs offer curated, scam-free listings.
IT Communities — Platforms like Spiceworks Community host specialist boards and discussions with trusted tech role postings.

Common Job Titles to Search
- IT Support Specialist or IT Support Analyst
- Help Desk Technician or Tier I/II Support
- Technical Support Representative
- Desktop Support Analyst

Resume Tips
- Highlight Technical Skills — Include operating systems (Windows 11, Windows Server), Microsoft 365, and networking basics (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
- Showcase Hands-On Labs — If you lack professional experience, document a home lab such as an Active Directory setup in Oracle VirtualBox.
- Add Keywords — Mention ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and password resets in your work history.

Interview Confidence Tips
- Practice Troubleshooting Frameworks — Be ready to explain step-by-step how you would diagnose a network drop or software failure.
- Emphasize Soft Skills — Help desk roles require patience, clear communication, and active listening over chat or phone.
- Use the STAR Method — Prepare short stories (Situation, Task, Action, Result) detailing past customer service or tech problem-solving experiences.

Good Luck with your search.

S.’s Answer

LinkedIn is a great place to start. However, please be careful to ensure the job posting is legitimate. I recommend checking out the company's website, comparing the salary range, and browsing the company's page on LinkedIn to view employee profiles to determine if it's a real posting.

Marty’s Answer

Hi Tammy -

The job boards are an easy go-to for job search and a first hand look at what these companies are looking for. I'd suggest that you look at the descriptions of qualifications and education that companies use to recruit candidates.

Getting confident on interviews is difficult and requires preparation. YouTube has great videos from recruiters that help you understand what hiring managers are looking for, how you can prepare, and what to say and what not to say. Practice is important, as is understanding who you are and what you bring in terms of expertise, values and culture. The Socratic "Know Thyself " is critical and will help you prepare for the questions that you weren't expecting.

Good luck - job search is is a job in and of itself.
