College major questions?

I know I want to work with kids, but am struggling deciding between two career pathways. I want to do either Peds Nursing or Early Childhood Education.
When picking my major, should I major in Nursing or ECE, or attempt to double major?

Clifford’s Answer

Pursuing a double major in Nursing and Early Childhood Education can be quite challenging because of the demanding clinical and lab requirements in nursing programs. Instead, it's best to focus on one path that aligns with your interests. If you love healthcare, solving medical problems, and want a flexible work schedule with good pay and career growth, consider Pediatric Nursing. You could also add a minor in Child Development to enhance your skills. If you are passionate about teaching, creating lesson plans, and working with children's development in a traditional school setting, Early Childhood Education might be the perfect fit for you.

Shivam’s Answer

Both options are wonderful for helping people and the planet, though they might require different educational paths. Think about whether you enjoy teaching. You could try being a teaching assistant or find a part-time job working with young children. If you like biology and medicine, that could lead you to pediatric nursing. From your question, it seems you would enjoy both paths, as they align with your values and personality. Wishing you the best on your journey!

Kumar’s Answer

It's great that you've already narrowed your interests down to two careers that both involve helping children. That's a good problem to have!
My advice would be to choose the major that aligns with the career you can most clearly see yourself doing every day.
• If you enjoy healthcare, science, working in hospitals, and caring for children who are sick or injured, then Nursing may be the better fit.
• If you enjoy teaching, child development, creating learning activities, and helping children grow and learn, then Early Childhood Education (ECE) may be the better fit.
A double major is possible, but it can be demanding, especially because nursing programs often have rigorous course and clinical requirements. Before committing to a double major, I would focus on determining which career excites you more.
One thing that may help is talking to professionals in both fields or, if possible, shadowing a pediatric nurse and an elementary school teacher. Seeing what their day-to-day work looks like can make your decision much easier.
Remember, both careers make a positive impact on children's lives. There isn't a wrong choice here. The key is figuring out whether you're more energized by helping children learn or helping children heal.
My advice: start by choosing the path that interests you most today, and don't worry if your plans evolve over time. Many students discover their true passion after gaining more experience in college.
