What are my next steps as a junior in HS(law/political science track)?

I am a junior at Drury HS, and I already have my college essay written, college visits scheduled, and have a pretty good idea of what I would like to do with my life after high school. I would like to go on the pre law track, majoring in Political Science, and double minoring in Psychology and International Studies. I am looking at colleges in Washington, DC as well as Boston. Does anybody have any advice from these fields of interest? I am interested as to how you went from school to your career?

Genevieve,

It's great that you are scheduling your college visits!

Please ask yourself a question. What do you plan to do as an attorney? And, another one. If for some reason you do not become an attorney (lots of people who start out on this track do not complete it, for one reason or another), what sort of work do you envision yourself doing? That is what I recommend you to major in. You don't have to major in Political Science to go to law school. If it's something you truly like, then perhaps I'd keep it.

Secondly, unless Psychology figures strongly in your future, I'd drop that minor. Keep the International Studies. Take a Psychology course or two with your Core subjects requirements, or your electives.

Other advice: Join the pre-law club, take debate, get on the student newspaper. Take Logic. Keep your GPA up. Do everything you can to master writing, speaking, and critical thinking. Use your undergrad time to learn planning and organization skills, study skills, personal housekeeping skills, etc. Time is of a premium in law school. Have FUN. These are the best years of your life!!
