Hi Diamond.

Good question. Technical skills depend on the Career path that you are going to choose. Big data, Artificial intelligence, Block chain, Python, Dev-ops, Machine Learning, etc are some of the hot skills that are trending now.

You also need soft skills for your career.

1. Communication.
2. Teamwork.
3. Adaptability.
4. Problem-Solving.
5. Creativity.
6. Work Ethic.
7. Interpersonal Skills.
8. Time Management.

Good Luck!!

Spruce’s Answer

Your question is right on target. The skills and knowledge that you will need to understand and actually perform your chosen career work (called “hard” skills) will come from your formal education, whether that be from a trade school or university or OJT in a business or other endeavor.

In addition, you will also need an entirely different set of skills and knowledge (called “soft” skills) to work effectively with other people. Our current school system does not actively teach these skills, but they are well understood and can be learned from formal or informal instruction and practice. Here’s a link to one view of “soft” skills, but you can search the Internet for “soft” skills and get different views and ideas on how to learn and practice them.

All the best.

Melisa’s Answer

Hi Diamond,

Thanks for your great question. I have a career in Corporate Social Responsibility, and I find that the skills I require every day, have much to do with our core values at AT&T. These values serve as a compass for guiding the work we do, every day. They also serve as a valuable reminder to me that my job centers around helping to serve others and helping improve our world.

For me, having the mindset that it’s about people working as a team to accomplish a much greater goal helps me prepare for any role or job assignment I have.

AT&T’s Core Values are:
Live true.
Think big.
Pursue excellence.
Inspire imagination.
Be there.
Stand for equality.
Embrace freedom.
Make a difference.

As you grow in your career, find your own core values that are important and helpful to you and hold true to them, no matter what your job or role is. This can also help you become a consistent and reliable employee as well as someone who can make an impact, no matter what team you are on.

In my role at AT&T, Make a Difference is especially important. I have the honor of working with employees who are passionate about helping others and making an impact in the communities where we live and work. And even though we are facing unprecedented times in our history right now, we can still make a difference, wherever we are.

Best wishes for success in your educational and career goals.

Sheila’s Answer

Hi Diamond:

This is a great question. You've received great comments from the CV Professionals, especially Melisa because I too work for AT&T and those are our core values. You want to make sure that you have hard and soft skills as described below:

HARD SKILLS
Hard skills are teachable abilities or skill sets that are easy to quantify. Typically, you'll learn hard skills in the classroom, through books or other training materials, or on the job.

Examples of Hard Skills:
• A degree or certificate
• Proficiency in a foreign language
• Machine operation

SOFT SKILLS
Soft Skills are subjective skills that are much harder to quantify. Also known as "people skills" or "interpersonal skills," soft skills relate to the way you relate to and interact with other people.

Examples of Soft Skills:
• Leadership
• Positive Attitude
• Teamwork
• Work Ethic
• Time Management
• Critical Thinking

Best of luck to you on your career journey!
