Great that you are interested in engineering. Here are a few things you can do:
- Take apart old appliances/electronics around the house, and try to put them back together. Keep asking questions of how stuff works, why stuff works.
- Watch "How it's made". Great show that has the manufacturing processes and materials of everyday things
- if you like to tinker, look into Arduinos for programming robotic sensors and actuators
- If you like coding/gaming, try the Microsoft Minecraft coding game. https://code.org/mc , http://time.com/4116041/minecraft-hour-code-coding/
- Don't be shy to work with your hands, get some tools and start tinkering.

Daniela’s Answer

Christian,

Students preparing to enter college to study engineering should plan to take as many math and science classes as possible. Examples of high school classes in the math and science fields needed for engineering are:

Math: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Probability & Statistics, Calculus I, and Calculus II.

Science: Physical Science, Biology, Applied Biology/Chemistry, Advanced Physics and Chemistry.

  • Undertake to read and study independently. This is a good way to develop interests, expand your knowledge and improve your vocabulary and reading comprehension skills needed for school. Engineering students often have the greatest difficulty with writing and English classes in their first year of post-secondary study. This will also help you if admission requirements include an interview, since you will be able to impress the committee with the knowledge you have built up of terms and issues specific to this area of study.

  • Gain experience in the engineering field. Job shadowing, talking with a professional, or attending a summer or spring break engineering camp are all recommended activities. Some universities have specific high school outreach programs, so check out the websites of the institutions near you. Some may also offer online activities for high school students.

  • Validate your interest in engineering by participating in science fairs or competitions. Volunteering and providing direct service in the engineering field is also a good way to demonstrate your commitment and can make a difference to your being accepted into highly competitive engineering fields.

  • Consider how you can develop leadership skills while you are still in high school. Admissions committees value engineering school applicants who can demonstrate leadership potential. You can acquire leadership by participating in or even starting school clubs, volunteer programs, and through an internship or a summer job.
