Hi Jarred,
As an engineer, you'll be challenged every day with problems. the tougher the problems, the longer it will take to solve them, and like any job you don't always get immediate satisfaction, but I can tell you that engineering projects - building machines, buildings, roads, writing software that performs a function, solving a process challenge - are all very rewarding when you see them through. Focus beyond just car mechanics and think about all the things that get built - someone has to design, build, and improve all those things. Aim high!

Ivan’s Answer

Hi Jarred,

I think that the first answers you should be looking for are what is quick (for some is a few hours, for some a week, some others maybe it will be counted in months) and what makes you proud once it is accomplished, then it might be easier to find a few different jobs that will give you what you are looking for. But one thing that is good about what you are asking is that you already know what you are looking for, you just need to go one or two layers deep to find out what exactly they mean.

With that being said, what I have learned in more than 20 years of experience working (full disclosure, not in engineering or as a mechanic) is that you will not always have your 'dream job'. So if (or when) you have a job that won't be as quick as you'd like it to be, try to see what steps and milestones will get you to the final result and feel proud and happy about each step that will get you there, as opposed to just looking at the final product or result.

I know this doesn't address your question directly but I hope this gives you a different perspective and helps if/when you do not have exactly that job you'd like to have with the quick results you are focused on.
