Hi Yareli!
There are a lot of job opportunities with a degree in social work! The major has a place in almost EVERY career field - it just depends on what your specific interests are! Do you like working with children? Or maybe adults or geriatric patients? If you're interested in social work, chances are you want to help people who are working through an experience, small or large, in their lives.
Some of the jobs/career fields available to people with social work degrees include:
- public welfare, which could include the Department of Education or veterans affairs
- school counseling (elementary to high school), or higher education (usually with a masters degree)
- criminal justice/corrections
- Healthcare (from hospitals to clinics to nursing homes)
- counseling at larger corporations that may offer counseling or social work services to employees
- local community organizations
- non-profits
As long as there are people who need help, social workers will always be needed! To get more info about the many options that exist for people who major in social work, I recommend reviewing The Bureau of Labor Statistics page on Social Workers: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/social-workers.htm. Some of my information I also got from the online resource "What Can I Do With This Major?" which may be available through your school or through a local college website.

The possibilities are almost endless in this field. Do you have a minor or particular area that interests you (e.g. healthcare, education, veteran, non-profit?).
I would take a few actions to help you narrow your search:
1) make a list of interests you have
2) review online platforms such as "socialwokguide.org"
3) have a trusted mentor review these with you and give you feedback as to where they see your individual skill set most applicable

I can say this for sure. Don't rush the process of having to know what major you want to do. Always keep your options open, your interest may change and rather quickly too. You are fresh out of high school there are places you can shadow and find different careers.
Thanks for the Advice!

Race’s Answer
Hello Yareli,
It is really depends what career you interested in to, because there have no boundary between major or jobs.
As your major is social worker, if you are willing to work in the related industry, I would suggest you to be an consultant on immigrants, homelessness, child/elder welfare, school social worker etc.
Therefore, find out what your interest are and start working on it and let it become your career path.
Good luck in the future! :)

Hi ! I work with ex-prisoners in England, helping them resettle in their communities after they're released. Although my background is teaching (Boston Univ., SED) a number of my colleagues are trained as social workers. It's rewarding, diverse work : helping guys who need a second chance, and at the same time helping reduce re-offending.
Research and visit prisons in your area
Read and view 'Just Mercy'
Arrange to meet and speak with a social worker
Tom recommends the following next steps:
Thank You for the advice.
