Is the process of becoming a doctor worth it?

I know it's time consuming definitely -- 4 years undergrad, another 4 for med school, and maybe 4 more for residency and experience? That's at least 12 years and after all that, a lot of debt might pile up too. So is the time, commitment, and money really worth it? #college #doctor #medicine #pre-med #pediatrics

Richard’s Answer

Yes! It is absolutely worth it. There are a lot of long hours studying in the library followed by long hours in the hospital, but it is a fulfilling career. There are so many opportunities after medical school... different specialties appeal to different individuals. Or you can follow a nonclinical route in research or even hospital administration.

Mary ’s Answer

Hi Fatema.

Yes becoming a doctor is worth it. Yes it will take you 12 years and lots of student loans but you will become doctor and a respectful doctor. I believe if that what you want to study you should go for it. In the mean time interview doctors and volunteer in the emergency room. If you still have the passion of becoming a doctor in 12 years it was worth it.

Good luck and believe in yourself.

Thank you comment icon All is worth it, only if you are passionate about your future career and the responsibilities and duties that come within. Your passion will speed drive your time spent on studying and residency. Maryam

Rachel’s Answer

For me, the time commitment was worth it. I spent 14 years in school after college to sufficiently train for my career, and I love my job. However, the sacrifices can be substantial. My biggest sacrifice was spending every third night on call away from my newborn baby her first year of life. Those are times that you don't get back. However, I now get to look forward to a long and fulfilling career in something that interests me every day.

Estelle’s Answer

Yes, Fatema! Totally worth it....and remember that you start receiving a salary as soon as you start residency (the first year after medical school.) That is a nice incentive to keep going. You also receive the regular employment benefits such as health insurance.
