I'm looking to go into business/economics. Any books or important concepts I should know involving investment and financing ?

How can I better develop myself as an incoming college student trying to learn business and finance. I feel that I'm relatively new to the area but am very interested in learning and pursuing a degree in that type of study #business #college-major

I agree with the above commenter. A good journal that will talk about current business and investment topics is the Harvard Business Review. Reading articles in that journal will probably cause you to want to further research areas that are important to you, and will help you in the papers you will have to write in your college courses.

In my opinion, the best way to prepare yourself is to do extra reading outside of class. As you progress through college you'll be assigned chapters out of text books. You should go to Barnes & Noble or Amazon and order books on investing in addition to your text books. Books written by Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffet would be a great place to start. There are thousands of books on the subject so don't be afraid to explore. Visit you local library as well. Last, start reading business/financial magazines and papers. Money Magazine, Kiplinger's, and the Wall Street Journal are my favorites.

In addition to the above, the Freak-a-nomics books, blogs, and podcast make it fun. A subscription to the Wall Street Journal and the Economist is a must! I would also recommend Don Reinertsen's Principles of Product Development Flow to understand how to apply economics to today's product development companies.

Hi Dylan,

As a college student studying English/Economics, I've read a couple of books that have really helped me in the work I've done in a couple of finance/pre-business associations here on campus. "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" is a classic that'll teach you a lot of the basics of investment. Here's the link to the book on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Random-Walk-Down-Wall-Street/dp/0393330338

If you'd like to learn more about the lifestyle of wall street workers in a less technical sense, I'd say check out Sam Polk's "For the Love of Money." The novel, while quite opinionated, gave me some really good insight into what daily life is like on wall street (stresses, struggles, sacrifices you'll have to make to succeed). If you're more interested in consulting work, you should take a look at "The McKinsey Way." It gives some great information on what mindset you should have as a person/academic if you're interested in consulting/problem solving. Those books should keep you busy for a while. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance!

It's really impressive that you're already beginning to educate yourself further on the business world; good luck!
David
