Dear Kedric,

Going for a master's in the same field can be a great asset under the right circumstances. For MBA programs, they generally are looking for students with business experience who want to develop skills in a particular area.

It is great that you already have an interest in management, just make sure that you are seeking out job and other professional opportunities where you can develop your management skills. These experiences will be valuable both for writing your statement of purpose for an MBA application and being successful with case studies for your MBA classes.

ShaRon’s Answer

Kedric,

Beyond the economic benefit you will have over the life of your career with an advanced degree, obtaining and MBA puts you in a level when it come to being qualified for advancement opportunities. Ideally, you also need to have some hands on work experience so my recommendation would be to get a job in the area you want to focus your career and begin learning the business. While doing so also enroll in the companies tuition reimbursement program and begin working on your advanced degree. Typically you have to be employed for a few months before the benefit kicks in but this way you avoid getting student loans to pay for it and you have a venue to apply the new skills you are learning to set yourself apart from the rest of your peers.

You will be able to include this accomplishment on your resume while adding the valuable work experience as well which will make you a more valuable employee. Also get involved in workplace groups like Toastmasters for public speaking and Employee Resource Groups that focus on your ethnic background or social orientation. That way you are building a network within the organization to further your reach.

In the economy who you know is as important as what you know, so its never to early to start networking. It goes without saying that you should be prompt in your attendance and excel in the role that you are being paid for. Work hard, stay alert and they sky is the limit for you! Best of Luck and I expect great things from you.
