Hello, what a great career choice !
Congratulations on your decision.
There are many avenues of study you may not equate to fashion at first, it is a rich and complex subject. Aside from the obvious, sewing, for technique ( you may not be a great seamstress, or care for this end of the business, many designers do not sew themselves, they are the idea people, but it would be nice to have a through knowledge of sewing techniques.
Also the companion disciplines ,embroidery, trims , passimentrie etc.
Art and art history, going to museums and seeing retrospective shows. Studying other cultures will broaden your references.
And of course the most overlooked , business, so you can manage your own business at first, and have a good road map to follow in growing your business !!
Good luck on your journey !!!

I started in apparel design and now I'm in automotive. The best advise I can give you is to learn computer software programs. Adobe illustrator, photoshop and nedgraphics if possible. Knowing how to hand sketch is great but most designing is on the computer. You'll start out on the assistant level which is doing flat technical sketches, supporting the design manager with color and art approvals, etc. A good understanding of textiles(knits/wovens ) and yarn types are also important.
I wish you the best in your future endeavors!

While I don't specifically work in the fashion industry; I was an intern at a high end handbag company in NYC during graduate school. One skill set that was really valuable for me in that role was Illustration - both by hand, and being comfortable drawing in Illustrator using vectors. I would suggest taking some drawing courses as well as courses specifically in Adobe Illustrator. Best of luck!

Ryan’s Answer

My biggest recommendation would be to meet with your guidance counselor and see if they can connect you with related companies that are looking for interns. Internships are a great opportunity to get a "behind the scenes" look at what the day-to-day is for people who work in the field you are interested it. It is also a great way to start making industry connections that will help once you graduate and start applying for jobs.
