Can my major be completely different from my intended minor?

I am currently a sophomore in a community college. This fall, I will be transferring to a four year university with a Junior standing. I am going to declare my major as Accounting. However, I have had an interest in teaching since I was young. I would like to minor in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (the school offers this particular minor) as I love to travel and would like to teach somewhere other than the US. Yet, I am worried that my advisers will try to steer me away from that path as they are totally unrelated.

I'm not sure if adding this minor would steer me away from the path I need to take in order to graduate on time. Yet, this is something that I would really like to try in case Accounting really isn't for me.

I would just like to hear some other opinions.

Sincerely,

A conflicted college student #college #major #help #college-jobs #college-minor #majors-and-minors

I believe that combining two areas of study that are very different is actually a huge asset in life. If your advisor is a little apprehensive, you might ask him/her if there is another advisor who has more experience working with students who combine different areas of study. Best of luck

Two different areas of expertise certainly would increase your "interesting factor". But the most important thing is to be true to who YOU really are and what you're passionate about. That's what will bring enjoyment to your work and success as well.

You might want to consider a double major; its at least something to consider - find out what the incremental cost in terms of time in school and money is to go with the double major rather than the major/minor.

Be you. Don't let any guidance counselor tell you to compromise who you are and what excites you. Let the real you shine through and you'll go far! Enjoy the journey!
