Hi Mimi,

I hope you’re doing well & wish that you have a great week ahead.

Now to answer your question

Orthodontists work in a special area of dentistry that focuses on teeth and jaw irregularities. Most often, patients are referred to an orthodontist by their general dentist. Orthodontists take X-rays, evaluate patients, apply braces and retainers, and create mouth guards to address TMJ and teeth-grinding issues. Successful orthodontists employ strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Some work for large orthodontic practices, while others are self-employed and manage their own offices. Orthodontists generally work full time, mostly during the week though some might maintain Saturday office hours.

Some of the qualities of a good orthodontist

They Should Be Comfortable with Close Interaction
Dental visits spook everyone, kids included. To make the visits less scary, you need a professional who understands the importance of close and open communication. Ideally, they should be in a position to have small talk with you and the child, make them feel at ease before the procedures, and comfort them when the orthodontic treatment processes get uncomfortable. This good positive and chatty relationship helps put the kids at ease, and anticipate the next visit, even though it might be a little painful.

A Detail-Oriented Person
Correcting teeth is not in any way as straightforward as other dental services such as getting a root canal or dental fillers. It needs a person who pays a lot of attention to details to see whether the condition of the patient’s teeth has improved in any way since they started using their braces, Invisalign, or dentures.

Leadership Qualities
The orthodontist should also be careful when using prosthetics, Invisalign, and braces to ensure that they are the correct fit for the patient, the orthodontist is in charge of hygienists and the people who will be sculpturing the actual braces or other prosthetics

Great Rapport with Children
This is an added point to people’s skills, but it has a different aspect. There are orthodontists who are good with adults. A good orthodontist can easily make a child relax and feel comfortable when a child visits or when preparing for a kid’s treatment plan. Children have an acute way of knowing if they can interact with you openly.

Passion for Their Job
When a good orthodontist is passionate about their job, they care about more than just the bottom line. They will want to know how their patients are faring, and they will do regular follow-ups to ensure nothing goes wrong. They will want the best results for you, because to them, your success is their source of satisfaction.

Great Listener
Being a good listener is a mastered art by a good orthodontist. This quality is present to those who have learned the tough task of putting their pre-conceived notions of a patient aside and combine the attentive nature with their wide knowledge base.

High Standards of Professionalism
A good orthodontist is one who will maintain the highest standards of professional dentistry throughout your interaction. First of all, he should be trained, qualified, and properly licensed and certified to operate. Then, he should have hands-on experience handling patients with the same or similar issues.

Sheila’s Answer

Hi Mimi:

Dentists/Orthodontists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth. They provide advice and instruction on taking care of the teeth and gums and on diet choices that affect oral health. Here are some qualities of an orthodontist. . . .

QUALITIES OF AN ORTHODONTIST

• COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Dentists must communicate effectively with patients, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and receptionists.
• DETAIL ORIENTED: Dentists must pay attention to the shape and color of teeth and to the space between them. For example, they may need to closely match a false tooth with a patient’s other teeth.
• DEXTERITY: Dentists must be good with their hands. They must work carefully with tools in small spaces to ensure the safety of their patients.
• LEADERSHIP SKILLS: Dentists, especially those with their own practices, may need to manage staff or mentor other dentists.
• ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS: Keeping accurate records of patient care is critical in both medical and business settings.
• PATIENCE: Dentists may work for long periods with patients who need special attention, including children and those with a fear of dental work.
• PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS: Dentists must evaluate patients’ symptoms and choose the appropriate treatment.

I'm sure there are other qualities out there for an orthodontist. These are just a few that I found during my research. Best of luck to you!
