How to follow up on internship applications?

I have been cold-emailing architecture firms seeking an internship opportunity for this summer, but have heard back from very few. Is it appropriate to follow up on emails I sent 3-4 weeks ago to try and get an answer? If so, what should I say?

Hi Emily,
Great question. I definitely think 3-4 weeks is a long enough time where you can now send a follow-up email. I'd recommend keeping the email brief, explaining that you are following up on their internship program. But also take some time to highlight on how you would be a great fit for this firm's internship program. I'd also recommend connecting with leadership and even the firm's recruiters on LinkedIn to show how interested you are in working for the firm. By connecting with them it will also put a face to the name when they review your application making it that much more authentic.

Three to four weeks has probably been long enough. Just say you were checking to make sure that they received your email and were looking for an update. Try not to sound urgent as much as possible. Have you tried contacting one of the company recruiters? You might be able to find them on Linkedin.

Hi there! I definitely think it's appropriate for you to follow up now. I would likely say something along the lines of, "Hi, I just wanted to follow up on my internship application. Thank you!" Hopefully this helps:)

Cameron’s Answer

It is perfectly acceptable to check in after 3-4 weeks.

A brief message would be enough. For example: "Hello, I wanted to check in with you to see if you received my previous email. I am still very interested in this internship position for XYZ reasons and believe I could contribute XYZ. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you!"

Jessica’s Answer

Hey Emily,

I am an architect who later did the MBA program, I have worked in both architecture firms and business companies.

I would recommend a follow-up to your email in around two to three weeks, saying that you would like to ask for any updates regarding your internship application.
I would also recommend applying to architecture firms by sharing your CV and related documents to an employee or a manager at the firm for them to refer you. This is possible by identifying people, working for the firms in which you are interested, on LinkedIn and reaching out to them by asking to connect and leaving a note regarding why you would like to connect, for example:

Hello --,

My name is Emily, I just graduated from school xx, or I am in my third year studying my xx. I found you as an employee at xx firm and I am interested in asking you some questions about the firm xx.

If possible, I would like to ask about the firm's internship program and have your perspective on firm xx.

Thank you.
Emily

Immediately after applying, send an email to the HR dept, an employee within HR, or the careers email, and inform them of your interest and recent application sent to them. If you have any questions include them in the email (if appropriate). I would say to not wait as long for 3-4 weeks to follow-up. 2 weeks is adequate.
