I enjoy playing video games and am considering becoming a video game designer. Is it better to go in to a regular computer science degree or some other specialized computer or graphics program?

There are many schools that offer computer science degrees but not as many that offer video game design as a major. What option is better for a career in this field? #engineer #computer #software #it

You can chose either path. Either you can complete a bachelor's degree in computer science and then opt for a career in graphics deisgning by take certifcate programs in graphics designing or animation or any other relevant ones or you can simply build your experties over the relevant technologies and opt for a career in graphics designing.

However, i recommend completing the degree first because that will provide a solid foundation to your career and academic achivement plus it will also help you in your career growth and better salary!

Having worked in the video game industry, the one thing I can say about game designers is that they have very different backgrounds. I know one that studied computer science, one that was a data scientist and one that was an english major. Game design is an incredibly competitive field and credentialing alone will not be the only thing to consider.

Computer science or game design will both be beneficial for getting the job, but I would focus more on developing a portfolio. Work on creating a body of work that you can share in various aspects of game design. Design a map, design a level, design a character that you might be able to add to your favorite game. Write a blog post on how you would design a game system.

Finally, don't be discouraged if you don't get an opportunity immediately. Like I said, there are a lot of people that want a job in game design, but it only takes one opportunity in order to get your career off the ground. Good luck and have fun!
