What would be the best way to mix Business and Computer Science interests?

I'm currently interested in majoring in both of them and am wondering how I would be able to mix the two of them. #college #computer-science #business #career #career-choice

Hi Sean.

Very good question!

Computer Science and Business are a fantastic combination! It allows you to understand the technical side as well as customers, markets, ramifications to the business. That type of well-rounded foundation is a huge selling point in technical industries.

Best of luck!

Jeff

Dr. Drew’s Answer

Managing IT requires both the ability to understand and follow technology trends, and the ability to align technology with the business. IT management needs to understand both sides to make appropriate decisions.

Since technology drives most companies anymore, a good understanding of computers and business will put you in a great spot to reach upper management.

Joseph’s Answer

If you have the basics of both areas, it is going to help you understand the guts of most IT and digitized businesses. Depending on where you will want to specialize, it will affect which roles you're most likely to be most effective in.

An example, you might be inclined to go in a Product Management role, where the business expertise will allow you to extract the necessary information from clients, markets, and business needs. The computer science aspect will allow you to understand, at a high level, any solutions being proposed and/or delivered. This is an overly simplified example, and you will need additional skills, especially soft skills, to be an effective Product Manager.

An education will give you the basic foundations, and both areas will require a life-long journey of learning both from others and your own experience.

My two cents, find a mentor, either through books or by asking explicitly. This will be indispensable for your career!
