To be effective at what you do, no matter what it is, you need to have some level of passion or enthusiasm for what you do. That doesn't mean that you job necessarily has to be your dream job, but you have to get something from what your job. Maybe you don't love your job, but it provides you the funds to do what you love or is a stepping stone to the job you really want. In my experience the folks that excel at their job are the ones who love it or love what they are getting from it so they put in the extra effort which makes all the difference.


Outside of passion, you need to be a pleasure to work with and add value to the broader team. There are very few jobs where you won't interact with at least one person. You could be the smartest person at your company, but if people don't like working with you it will be hard to be effective. Along the same lines, find a way to be indispensable. As a consultant, I've owned a task that no one else could do or knew how to do, created a unique relationship with a key client , and been an expert in something no else knows. The other part of adding value is to find ways to be proactive. don't necessarily wait to be given a task. If you see a gap or a task that needs to be done, do it. When you are given a task, see if you can go above and beyond and guess what will be asked of you next. If you can become a valued member of a team and be a pleasure to work with, most mistakes that you make are usually forgiven the first time around. I've seen colleagues that aren't as much of a pleasure to work with make one mistake and not be given a second chance.

Allison recommends the following next steps:

Determine if you want to "live to work" or "work to live." Either choice is good, but you should determine your priorities and what are are and aren't willing to sacrifice.
