Considering you already get all the needed technical knowledge to become a computer programmer, I think that to succeed in your career you will need to develop a number of soft skills that will make a difference between you and any other engineer, like :
- The ability to communicate effectively and to find ways to diplomatically convey your message
- Cooperation by being pleasant with others on the job and displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude
- Stress Tolerance because computer programmer requires accepting criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high stress situations

I agree with Ghita in that soft skills will help you advance in your career. Clear communication both verbally and written is a must. I'm assuming that since you say you already are in a career as a computer programmer, you already have the education and background required. One thing I've learned is that you need to constantly make an effort to keep those skills hones as new technologies and computer languages are developed. I've made it a point to take online courses through a reputable university to keep my knowledge up-to-date. computer-programming strategic-communications professional-development
