Alexandra’s Answer

This is harder to answer because an MIS Major can apply to a variety of jobs. For example, I studied MIS in college but when I graduated I started working as a Business Systems Analyst. Right out of college, as an entry-level Business Systems Analyst in the San Francisco Bay Area at an older tech company, I started making about $72K base salary. Now that I'm almost 5 years in, I'm in the same role and I'm making about $106K base salary. This does not include any stock investments, 401K matching, any benefits like that.

Hello, Van. This can greatly depend on location. However, according to CollegeFactual.com, "After graduation, management information systems majors from schools in the United States earn an average salary of $52,163 per year." You can few more information here: https://www.collegefactual.com/majors/business-management-marketing-sales/mis-management-information-systems/rankings/highest-paid-grads/#:~:text=large%20student%20population.-,Upon%20graduating%20with%20a%20bachelor's%20degree%2C%20MIS%20majors,an%20average%20salary%20of%20%2471%2C100.

Dan’s Answer

The salary will vary depending on location, company, industry, and your specific specialty and experience. Salaries are higher in San Francisco California or New York where the cost of living is high and lower in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where the cost of living is much less.

You can do a Google search for "salary survey computers" to identify sites that survey employees and report the findings. Note that you will be presented with salaries for starting, average and senior workers and that you must adjust these numbers, depending on what part of the country you live in. Most jobs are based on 2000 hours of work per year so you can compute hourly salary by dividing annual salary by 2000. MIS jobs are not usually based on 40 hours per week, rather you are paid "to get the job done" and will not punch a time clock. The expectation is that the job is normally about 40 hours per week however you may have to work extra hours in special situations (without extra pay).

You may also be eligible for an annual bonus or performance pay which would depend on the performance of both the company and you. And finally, you should get a retirement plan of some sort, maybe worth 3-6% of your salary each year as well as paid medical benefits. These additional forms of compensation are extremely important and can significantly increase the value of your employment.

In general, I will predict that you will earn an annual starting salary of at least $50,000 with a maximum upwards of $100,000, depending on the conditions explained above.
