Mia’s Answer

Hi Gerardo

Great question. Here are a few things to know:

1.Volunteer to be a social worker's aide while you are still in high school. You will get firsthand experience to discover what social work can entail.

  1. Maintain a good grade point average throughout high school. Establish good study habits for yourself.

  2. Ask your guidance counselor for a list of colleges in your preferred locations that offer social work programs.

4 Be aware that a bachelor's degree in social work (B.S.W.) is required for entry-level positions in the social work field.

  1. Get licensing exam information for the state in which you live.

I hope this helps.

Empathy, boundary setting, active listening, social perceptiveness, self-awareness, persuasion, cooperation and relaxation and de-compression.
By the very nature of who we are and what we do, most of the qualities and skills mentioned here are innate to our own personalities.

Simeon’s Answer

You'll need to be able to handle details for others, work well with other cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, and will need to develop the ability to actively listen. Active listening in particular is a life-long skill that takes years to get better at. One of my first recommendations for active listening is developing your curiosity about other people's stories and finding parts of their lives that intrigue you. People know the difference between someone who's dutifully listening and one who is genuinely curious.
