Great question. I ended up getting married two years before I ended up going to medical school. My wife works in the nursing and already had a decent understanding of what medicine would entail and we discussed these things before getting married. My wife always knew that I was busy and that I would become more busy as time went on. That being said having a relationship while going to school is not as hard as people make it out to be. There are stressful moments and moments that may become difficult. I have rotations and times where I am gone for the majority of the day and I come home and see my wife and have an hour to talk with her before she takes off. That is emotionally more difficult, but it is what you do during your time together that is important. Me and my wife always spend a fair amount of time doing something we enjoy together when we have time off. If we are both reading a book we will lay with one another and talk to one another about what is going on in our book. We will constantly send messages to one another telling the other how our day is going.

Medical school is very busy there is no denying that. There will be times where you are stressed and frustrated and will want to give up. These are the times that having someone there to listen are amazing. I wouldn’t be where I am at right now without my wife she is my rock and she is one of the smartest people I have ever known. A relationship is a two way street find small things that let the other one know that you care. Whether it is writing a note in their lunch saying that you love them and hope they have a good day. Just let them know when you need to study and when you really need to take time to study for something. Be open and transparent and it will all be okay.

You got this and if you need any more help just let me know.
