Furgencio’s Answer

First, define what successful looks in your head and what it means to you as most people have different definitions. One person may say 4.0 GPA regardless of social involvement; while others may say a 3.0 GPA but lived the best time of my life is enough, and then there can be another camp stating as long as I got to my dream company, that's success. So define your VISION first. Second, create your path to your vision of success a fun one, but this freedom must be coupled with responsibility; therefore, there will always be a tension between fun and discipline. Reverse-engineer that path, meaning, start with the end goal, and walk that path backwards to where you are today. Make that a challenge, it should be a journey about really learning about yourself along the way, and be gentle and patient (as your parents were when you had to learn how to walk, talk, be potty-trained, etc.). Now you are discovering you with a mission to your vision, and as implied in the last sentence, take baby steps at it, as the goal is to be better today than yesterday with no end in sight. Remember, life is not about going to college, getting a job, earning a paycheck, but really knowing who you are and fulfilling yourself, regardless of how that manifests itself (we've seen many successful people not go to college or take regular jobs). With that, I am saying, be open, flexible and allow the path to unfold as you continuously discover yourself with aim to fulfill your vision.

Furgencio recommends the following next steps:

Define vision of success. Write it down, ponder it, think about it some more, sleep on it, come back a few days, and re-edit it.
From the vision, put a timeline. By end of college, my success would have been XYZ and then work backwards, where you'd like to be in last semester (light course load); second to last semester (job attainment); summer break (internship & summer trip); third to last semester (interviewing a lot and heavier course load), etc.

Hello Aliana,

The key is managing your time. You create your own class schedule so do it in a way that fits whatever activities you want to be in. Stay ahead of your school work to prevent having to do all nighters. Most sporting events and activities happen at nights and weekends so spend weekdays focused on school.

Richard’s Answer

Go to class. Plan to spend 2-3 hours studying for every hour of lecture. Attend your professor's office hours and any TA review sessions. If there is a test bank, use that as a study tool to understand what your professor wants you to focus on for the test.

Treat school like a job. Get up early, get to work and when your work is done at the end of the day, you can spend time on social life or organizations.
