Landing Internships in Tech

As a computer science student, what are several steps I should take in order to get an internship at a top company? Are the classes enough, should I focus on multiple side projects? Have one larger side project? And once I do get an internship, how can I make sure to get an extension of it?

Bryan’s Answer

Jimmy said a lot of the same that I would suggest. Your college should be hosting some career fairs and have employers coming on campus. Companies like to get their names out there and build a network of potential candidates. If there are specific companies you are hoping to land an internship with-call them! Think of questions to ask before you call so it is not just a question of do you have interns or not. Ask about how the program works, what the interns can be involved in, etc. My previous employer had interns work on actual software projects so when they finished the internship they had real experience.

Jimmy’s Answer

Go to carrier job fairs (normally on your own school and others) and have your resume ready! talk about your school projects on your resume!
If you want to be on a top company , like google, you can simply search google internships and it will be really easy to find. If you get an interview be prepared. Study what they questions are, they are all over the internet

Chris’s Answer

As someone who's landed an internship in tech to start my career I can outline the steps I took.

Chris recommends the following next steps:

Identify a few companies that are related to what you'd like to do in the future. This can be a tech company or software company or robotics or whatever. Look at Linkedin.com and find software/hardware companies that are in the field or close to where you live.
Search for people who are doing the types of things at your target company. Can't find anyone using linkedin? Search resumes on indeed.com with the company name and try to identify email addresses.
Craft an email and linkedin message and shoot it off to some of the folks in the job function or management function at your target company. Ask them if their dept uses interns and who you should contact. You might be surprised as to fact that people will respond to emails saying hey, I'm a student and I want to intern in your dept, who should I speak with?...
If you get an email address of someone to contact, reach out that person saying hey I got your information from so & so and I'm really looking to intern (or get a job) and do they have time to discuss opportunities on the phone. What you're doing here is bypassing HR which is absolutely key to successfully finding jobs and internships.
Call said person and plead your case, be hungry and don't be afraid to take chances... Outline what you think you can bring to the team and the experience you'd like to get, ask for their help and usually people will respond !
