Orthodontists / Orthodontist assistants

Hello! My name is Emily and I am a current high school student. I'm conducting an interview with any professional in the orthodontist field for a Foundations in Health Science Class project about careers! I have created a total of some questions that I am curious about in this profession.

1. What profession did you choose? Why?
2. How many years of college did you go through?
3. What jobs did you work on before you landed your present professional job?

What profession did you choose and why?

I chose to be an orthodontic assistant because I wanted a healthcare job where I could work directly with patients and be part of a team. I like helping patients with their treatment and watching their progress.

How many years of college did you complete?

The requirements depend on the state and employer, but typically include:

1. High school diploma or GED
2. Certificate program, which usually takes 9 months to 2 years, or on-the-job training
3. Some assistants go on to get additional certifications for expanded functions.

What jobs did you have before your current one?

Common previous jobs include:

1. Front desk or reception work in a dental office
2. Sterilization technician
3. General dental assistant
4. Internship or externship from a training program

Hey Emily,

I'm not an orthodontist but I'd love to help with your project!

1. What profession did you choose? Why?
I found a similar question that asked what people like about their job as an orthodontist (https://www.careervillage.org/questions/682163/name-what-you-love-about-this-career-and-what-you-dislike-about-it-if-any) which might help.

2. How many years of college did you go through?
It looks like it takes around 8-11 years. This consists of four years of undergrad, four years of dental school, and around three years for a specialty, such as orthodontics.

3. What jobs did you work on before you landed your present professional job?
Because it takes so long to become an orthodontist, most people's first job is in dentistry. Often times, students will work other jobs (retail, tutoring, service jobs, etc) to help pay for schooling and other education costs
