Rachel’s Answer

Teaching with a multi-sensory approach is always fantastic for Autism and ADHD. Videos can be an excellent choice since they provide both visual and auditory input. To reinforce learning, try repeating the material and writing it down multiple times. YouTube videos, like the one linked below, can be a valuable resource for teaching.

This might not work in this situation, but in my tutoring days, I learned that students are more willing to engage when it involves something they care about. For instance, I worked with a student who HATED writing. Getting him to write a single word, let alone a sentence, felt like pulling teeth. As I continued to work with him, I had a lightbulb moment! He absolutely loved dinosaurs and knew everything about them, including how to spell them. I started incorporating dinos into our work. I gave him prompts and allowed dinos to be characters in his stories. He loved it and it made writing so much more enjoyable about him.

From my experience, students on the spectrum usually have some sort of hyper fixation. See if that can be incorporated. Maybe its adding dinosaurs to your science questions or if they get 3/5 questions right on a practice test, they get to watch a video on trains (a common fixation).
