Jerome’s Answer

I think there are a few things you can do that will have an impact

Do your work to the best of your ability and continue to look for ways to improve yourself (attend workshops, take classes, listen to ted talks, etc). I have found success in my career by being ready for as much as possible and having the ability to figure out the rest when needed. It is amazing how much you can Google and look impressive in front of others.

Network within your organization. Treat everyone well and get to know them. Ask what they are working on and share what you are doing. People move jobs all of the time and you never know when you will need a resource or end up reconnecting with someone.

Volunteer within the community. I've had numerous non-profits post my story or share things that I am working on. That is all great recognition to have when someone goes to google your name for a role.

You also need to understand if you are in the right environment. I worked a job for 8 years without a promotion and when I moved to the next job, I was promoted twice in 2 years. Be patient, but also be aware and realistic.

It really boils down to your workplace environment. In the past, becoming the "teacher's pet" was a common strategy to win over your boss. However, this approach often came with drawbacks and nowadays, it's not the best method. It can lead to exploitation and typically, it takes a significant amount of time to climb up the ladder. My top suggestion is to adhere to the rules and strive to minimize your mistakes as much as possible!

Mary Anne’s Answer

Start by pinpointing your strong suits and areas where you can improve. Have a conversation about your professional aspirations with your boss or direct supervisor to map out the most effective way forward. Ensure you maintain a transparent channel of communication with both the management and your colleagues. Be bold in showcasing your achievements and also in owning up to any missteps.

Remember, your mindset is your most powerful tool. Display a readiness to learn, to undertake projects, and to work hand in hand with your coworkers and team. Prove that you're a team player - when the team thrives, everyone benefits.

It's crucial to consistently push your boundaries. Excelling at the fundamentals of any role is one thing, but you become truly valuable when you show the capacity to enhance procedures and relationships with business partners. Engage in projects or tasks that pique your interest - even if you're unsure of the outcome.

Make it a point to always seek feedback from your boss, colleagues, and business partners. Feedback is designed to give an impartial perspective of your strengths and areas for improvement. Use this feedback as a springboard to propel your career forward.

Communicate with sincerity and understanding. Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Formulate a plan that details your short-term and long-term career objectives. Review and modify this plan as your goals evolve over time.

Finally, never stop learning, whether it's through online courses or furthering your formal education. Gain insights about your chosen career by engaging with others in the same profession.

Matthew’s Answer

Hello Autumn, the short answer to your question is 'hard work'. Always put in the effort without complaint. You may find that some of your coworkers work slower and/or complain about the work. Don't fall into the trap that so many hard workers do by following the crowd. Instead, let yourself shine by working hard.

Another great way to work your way up is to be adaptable. This means being willing to change. Sometimes, we get used to the work we're doing and lose focus on our goal to progress our careers. When we get too comfortable with what we're doing and "opportunity knocks" we may resist change and continue with the "comfortable" work.

Sometimes the path to progressing in your career is indirect. In other words, you may have to work in an area of the company that isn't interesting, in order to progress to the next step.

Continue learning. A lot of companies offer tuition reimbursement which is a great benefit to take advantage of. Some companies provide access to e-learning courses to learn new skills to help you move forward.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Daniel’s Answer

Hi Autumn!

Below are five answers I have heard from senior leadership:

1. Always look to improve the process.
2. Be a team player.
3. Lead with empathy and listen to your team when they bring you concerns.
4. When you run into hurdles don't give up so easily.
5. Don't be afraid to speak up in team meetings.
