Paul’s Answer

It is probably a good idea to become what author David Epstein defined as a "Generalist," or a person who is trained and educated in many different skills and specialties.

Epstein (and others) have reasoned that as technology continues to advance, specializing in one occupation is not going to work anymore. Especially if that technology (in this case AI), has developed to a point where it can replace you.

It is best to get education and certification, and skills in several different skill areas, to offset this development and maintain your demand within the work force.

Jack’s Answer

Great question, Madison. It's totally normal to be concerned about how technology — in this case, AI — can impact your chosen career. But whenever there is a new, potentially disruptive technology, the people who are able to thrive are the ones who embrace it. This doesn't mean that you necessarily have to become an AI engineer or even be an expert in digital technology. It simply means that if your chosen profession is one that is impacted by artificial intelligence, find out which tools have been developed for your industry and learn how to use them and incorporate them into your work. Ask your company or manager if you can take the lead in implementing them for your team. The people who will thrive in the AI age are the people who USE AI. The people who resist it will be the ones impacted the most.

Now, you also asked about the possibility of your job/profession no longer being needed. That's a trickier question. But the answer is pretty much the same. If you learn to work with the new technology (again, here we're talking about AI) you will make yourself that much more attractive to future employers, even in other industries or professions. Companies are always looking for people who can work within new tech systems, but they're also looking for people who can learn and adapt to the NEXT new developments. You make yourself valuable by making yourself irreplaceable. Even in the AI age, we can still be irreplaceable if we learn to work WITH it and not be afraid of it.

Lainie’s Answer

I work in the creative content industry, and many people are asking themselves themselves the same question.

Something to keep in mind is that AI makes processes more efficient. And more efficient processes mean you'll get to work on more things, getting exposure to additional projects at a company. Having a variety of projects you work on will ultimately be beneficial to your career and give you more items to list on your resume.

Also, the human element will always be necessary to gut check AI. AI tools don't always "get it right" and sometimes come up with answers that aren't always "on brand" for what a company wants to say about itself on its websites or social media platforms. Right now it's really important to get curious about various AI tools and platforms. Some of them are free and some of them even have free trials.

Let's say you're interested in working as a social media content creator that primarily focuses on Instagram and Facebook. Try setting aside 10 minutes a day to put in different prompts. For example, let's say you write a caption for an Instagram post for an imaginary company (or a company you like). You can ask a tool such as ChatGPT to come up with 5 different ideas for what the image to go with that post's caption could be. It will take a human to look at those examples to decide which makes the most sense to then create that visual.

Hopefully the above example helps provide an example as to how people can work alongside technology and not be replaced by it!

Mudita’s Answer

Hello, Madison! Thanks for bringing up your question. AI indeed holds immense potential, but it also prompts many to reconsider their career paths. This can be both thrilling and daunting, often simultaneously!

My advice is to welcome AI with open arms and foster an interest in it. Use this interest as a driving force to learn more and understand how AI can enhance your value in your current role. If job security is a concern, it might be helpful to communicate to your employer the positive contributions you're making through your understanding of AI.

Should your job or industry become obsolete, I suggest analyzing your skills to see how they could be applied to other industries or roles. While switching careers can be a significant shift, starting with your existing skill set can make the transition smoother. You may discover that this is a fantastic chance to explore a new facet of your role, one that could lead to greater job satisfaction and happiness in the long run.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Madison !

You've asked such a pertinent and important question that is current and will surely be one of concern both now and in the future. It would not be the first time that this sort of transition ever happened as there has been a similar change like that in our recent past, too. Not too long ago, many people were replaced by overseas outsourcing of their jobs when companies moved their businesses overseas and caused marked changes in our country. I knew a couple of people more recently who did have to leave their jobs as their positions were being outsourced and moved to a different country. One of these people told me that she even had to train the person to do her job before she was let go. That must have been very difficult, yes.

But I have some advice for you to have a back up plan in case you ever get a position you love and than have to be let go. Decide on a second interest now, something for which you can do a private service, start your own business or make and sell something independently. Right now you are a student and can think about a major and a minor for college. This can provide you with some sort of back-up plan. I myself have had careers in both my college major and my minor.

My second suggestion is to apply for a different job as soon as you get the feeling you will be let go. Although that is simplistic advice, you will want to keep your income coming in. Don't hesitate to apply for Unemployment Insurance at your local Department of Labor. That could help for about 6 months or until you get a new job.

My next suggestion is more like a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" type thing. Find a way to learn one of the types of AI and get a job generating AI. Even though AI may do the work of many people and many people may not be needed anymore, there still will be a need to run and program the AI and for people to teach AI.

It is good that you are thinking this far ahead, but you probably don't have anything much to worry about. As you navigate your education, there will be a lot of things you will come up with such as new skills and new interests.

I hope this has helped and I wish you the best going forward !

Layne’s Answer

This is an amazing question. I am in two careers that are predicted to be replaced by AI. What would I do? Any time something is "disruptive", meaning, creates a new industry or even eliminates one, look at what it "doesn't" do. That is where the opportunities are. AI will do a lot, but it can't do everything in a certain industry (such as law, etc.), so look at where you would still be needed. For example, AI can replace some legal research, but it can't litigate that research in court, it can't meet with clients and show empathy, etc. Also look at ways that you can use these new technologies and what new careers are created as a result.

Layne recommends the following next steps:

Think about the field you want to enter (law, etc.) and how AI will affect that. Think about what AI won't replace.

James Constantine’s Answer

Hello Madison,

The Impact of AI on Jobs and Professions

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to disrupt various industries and professions. The question arises: what happens when your profession is no longer needed due to AI replacing your job? This essay will explore the potential consequences of AI-induced job displacement and the possible solutions to mitigate its impact.

The Rise of AI and Its Effect on Jobs

The introduction of AI technology in various sectors has been a significant factor in changing the job market. Jobs that were once considered stable and secure are now at risk of being replaced by AI-driven automation. This shift has led to concerns about unemployment and the future of work.

One of the most prominent examples of AI-driven job displacement is the automation of manual labor. Jobs such as manufacturing, assembly lines, and transportation have already experienced a decline in demand due to AI-driven robots and autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, AI has also made significant strides in the service industry, with virtual assistants and chatbots taking over customer service roles.

The Consequences of Job Displacement

Job displacement can have severe consequences for individuals and the economy as a whole. Unemployment rates can rise, leading to increased financial instability and social unrest. Additionally, the loss of jobs can result in reduced government tax revenue, putting a strain on public services and infrastructure.

Moreover, job displacement can have a profound impact on the mental and emotional well-being of individuals. The loss of a job can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and a sense of hopelessness. This can have a ripple effect on families and communities, further exacerbating social issues.

Potential Solutions and Adaptations

To address the challenges posed by AI-driven job displacement, various solutions and adaptations have been proposed. These include:

Education and Training: Encouraging workers to acquire new skills and pursue higher education can help them stay relevant in the job market. Governments and private organizations can offer financial support and incentives to facilitate this transition.

Redistribution of Work: Sharing work among a larger pool of workers can help alleviate the burden of job displacement. Policymakers can implement policies that encourage the sharing economy and flexible work arrangements.

Income Redistribution: Implementing a universal basic income (UBI) can provide a financial safety net for those who lose their jobs due to AI-driven automation. This would help alleviate the financial stress experienced by displaced workers.

Encouraging Entrepreneurship: Promoting entrepreneurship and small business growth can help create new job opportunities and stimulate the economy. Governments can offer incentives and support programs to encourage entrepreneurial activity.

Collaboration between Humans and AI: Rather than viewing AI as a threat to human jobs, embracing the potential for collaboration can lead to the creation of new roles and industries. By leveraging the strengths of both humans and AI, new opportunities for growth and innovation can emerge.

Interesting question Madison - this topic has come up multiple times within different circles... my take - AI is a tool and has the potential to become a major revolution point in human history. Generally speaking what happens during a technological revolution is the level of living conditions for humans increases.... new offshoot industries are found and we achieve greater potential. In short I'm embracing the new tool hoping one day I can be working on warp drive.

Emma’s Answer

I whole-heartedly agree with Lainie above! I work in content marketing as well and our team is constantly talking about the realities of AI—what it can do for our roles, our business, and our industry. AI is certainly a "hot topic"—it seems to be everywhere. It's super important to understand the ins and outs of any new or emerging technology.

For this specifically, I would suggest taking some time to understand and learn about AI and it's impact on your specific area of interest. Reacting out of fear almost always proves to be the wrong move (hello, history) and by remaining curious, playing with new opportunities, you'll almost always end up in a great spot.

Matt’s Answer

Amazing question Madison - and you have some amazing answers to read through! One other thought - and something I have been thinking about a lot recently is that there are two sides to this question - what is a job becomes obsolete AND what if new jobs become available. History tells us that just as one things ends another thing happens. For example, my current job did not exist when I was at school - and some jobs have changed beyond recognition. It is human nature to worry more about the loss of something than the creation of new things. My advice is to keep doping what you are doing (which is thinking about and asking yourself and others these questions) and then think about how you create options in your life - as you think about the way you spend your time (at school, at work, volunteering) think about creating career agility - try not to put all your eggs in one basket. Now at some point you may decide to double down on something and really become an expert - but think of your career as a constant journey of exploration - try and gravitate to things that you find interesting and ideally do not take you down a one-way road. I have always thought about how I can transfer my skills should something happen - for example it is way more likely the company you go work at goes bust or has a layoff - compared to a whole job becoming obsolete over night (jobs take a long time to go away fully). You can’t control layoffs, company’s making bad decisions, or the impact of technology - but you can choose to give your self more options should things happen. And the big secret in here - is that almost everyone who develops this career agility performs better in whatever they are doing - because they are more confident and less worried (who cares if you have a plan B, C and D!) - which means you are more not less secure - and becuase you are open to evolving and learning you will succeed.

Catherine’s Answer

Great question! This is something I ponder quite often. AI is definitely here to stay, whether we're ready for it or not. Instead of viewing it as a rival, we should shift our mindset and see it as a helpful tool that can streamline our current job roles. As a tech designer, I've discovered numerous AI programs that not only speed up my work but also maintain its high quality. Another approach could be to embrace the AI trend and work alongside it, rather than resisting it. Alternatively, we could consider transferring our skills to an industry that's relatively immune to AI.

Mydhili’s Answer

Consider this perspective on the subject of artificial intelligence (AI) potentially replacing human jobs, particularly the job you've chosen for yourself. I hope you find it insightful:

Embrace AI: I've encountered numerous individuals who've pondered this question - only to change their stance about being replaced after engaging with the AI available at the time. This shift often stems from overcoming the fear of the unknown. The prospect of using unfamiliar technology can be intimidating, but once you've experienced it firsthand, you can assess the legitimacy of your fears.

Stay engaged with AI/technology: It's crucial to remain informed about how your counterparts in different sectors or those in similar roles at other firms are utilizing technology to propel their careers forward. The essential lesson here is to flip your fear into curiosity, exploring ways to leverage AI for your benefit. Naturally, this should be done responsibly, taking into account the constraints of your employer or educational institution.
