What a fabulous interest you have and it's important if you are interested in making your love of doing hair a profession that you get a lot of advice.

Firstly, Cosmetology is not an academic major. Cosmetology is a vocational school subject, however, some community colleges have a Cosmetology vocational training program and you'd get an Associate degree in it if you go that route. Some high schools offer Cosmetology, too. By now, I assume you know whether or not you have that offered at your school, but it is not a major, per se, it is a profession and you would go for a state license to be a hair stylist/dresser. But first , if you are in high school, find out if your school offers it. If it doesn't you'll have to do some looking into it and find out which high school does offer cosmetology and see if it is possible to change to or go to that high school. A parent or adult could probably help you make the phones calls needed for this. In high school, it would be best to take classes in Art, Business and Marketing. But there is no major. You would be learning everything pertaining to cosmetology. Northwest High School is the school in Cincinnati that offers cosmetology.

Do you feel ready to work on people's hair yet ? You may want to take that leap and try some easy things with friends and family who would like their hair done. Working on live people is very different from a model head and when you believe the time is right for you, you will learn the difference. Even professional hair stylists practice new things on model heads, though. Build onto your skill by going to the next step, but you will know when the time to do it is right for you. Keep up with the latest hair trends and styles by reading everything you can on line. Since you love doing this and have skill at it, I hope that you continue with it. You may have just found your calling !

If you're already in high school and no cosmetology program is offered, you can go to cosmetology school in your community after you graduate high school. The names of the beauty schools in your city, both of them are accredited, are : Great Oaks Career Campuses and Moler Beauty Academy. You can read their websites if you want to find out more about them or even visit them to possibly have an orientation.

I hope that this has been of some help to you and wish you all the best in school and your journey towards a rewarding career !

Cosmetology is a scientific pursuit. Some universities offer degrees in this subject, under the faculty of science, but you don't necessarily need a degree to become a cosmetologist! In the US, you need to work towards becoming a licensed cosmetologist, but each state has different requirements for getting that precious license.

I recommend you do some research into the schools that prepare you for this license. I've found a couple of web sites that should get you started in this hunt:
