Do your research on different colleges and their nursing programs! Do not rush trying to find one, you want to try to find a good one. Also look into colleges that accept TnPromise. If it is going to be hard for you/your parents to pay for college then it is a good think to look at! In my opinion, 2 years free is a good start!

On your application, especially in your essays, make sure to not just answer the questions but be creative and tell a story. It helps to captivate the reader and standout from all the other essays they read. The essays are a chance for you to showcase your personal brand: who you are and where you want to be.

Also do research for each school and include specific information you researched in your essays. You can include professors or classes you want to take, research you want to do, organizations you want to join, etc. It shows that you want to go to their school specifically and that you have done your due diligence on the school. If it is a general application though, then keep it vague since the same essay will go to multiple schools.

If your parents can't afford private school, consider state universities as a viable option. Steer clear of student loans due to their high interest rates. For a Nursing degree, state schools can offer an education just as valuable as Ivy League institutions.

Currently, there's a significant shortage of nurses, especially after the pandemic, which led many to leave the profession permanently. Hospitals are pushing nurses to work long hours without adequate compensation. Furthermore, nurses often face mistreatment from hospital staff, doctors, and patients due to these shortages. This isn't meant to discourage you, but it's crucial to be aware of the reality.

If you choose to pursue a nursing program, consider specializing in a field like ICU where the pay is better and the workload is more manageable. Regrettably, nurses often don't receive the respect they deserve, leading many to abandon the profession.

I highly recommend attending info sessions or college fairs or school tours if possible. It’s amazing how much is available virtually these days! Gives you a chance to ask questions about their location while also potentially getting your name in front of the team that might make decisions. Take advantage of your guidance counselor as most take on that role with the goal of helping you succeed.

Olivia, my best advice technically would be to focus on improving three things: writing skills, organization skills and time management skills. Those are the secrets to success in college, although of course there are others. As for more personal advice, build on the interests, hobbies, skills, experiences and values you already have to explore classes and a field of study that you imagine will lead to a fulfilling life. Open yourself up to new experiences and diverse people, and enjoy this time of your life.
