The accounting field has been a high demand career path for years now and can lend itself to work internally within businesses, auditing, and even law enforcement. Forensic accounting is pivotal in preparing cases for prosecuting offenders. I am from IT field however my Spouse is CA so I believe I can relate your question. It depends on how passionate you are about your carrier. The accounting field is fairly broad, and you can be an accountant during all of your carrier or become an entrepreneur. It all depends how you proceed your carrier.
But I am fairly confident that accounting is a field where most of the people will finally fall into their carrier.
Like as an IT professional once you do PMP (Project management) or people management you will eventually learn the accounting in terms of IT.
The carrier is in demand and always be since it's a backbone of any business.
If you would like to learn start from very basic where you can join any accounting firm as an intern. You can later go and build up gradually by doing certification like IFRS and later CPA which is highly recommended and recognized globally. These certifications will not cost you much and will you high ROI.
The accounting career path may need some years to build as you may need some experience and later you can plan to go to taxation, auditing, businesses, IT law and other carrier path. Being an accountant not only allow you to build your carrier as professional but also gave you option to be a CEO or CFO or build your startup or create a financial service firm. As said limitless options.
I suggest to checkout LinkedIn and international communities for Certificated public accountant (CPA) and Charted accountant (CA). Connect with these professionals will give you insights. I see CPA and CA are specific to countries as some recognize CA and some CPA. As CA(India) is hard to crack compared to CPA USA, you can plan for CPA as it takes 18 months around to crack the exam. (Check the prerequisite).
There are lots of banks, large IT firms and all fortune 500 companies recognize CPA and most of them need CPA as base to conduct interview for various roles.
