How do business majors work?

I am currently a graphic design student at Mt. San Antonio College planning to transfer to a four year university in the fall of 2025. However, I realized that I want to switch my major to business since I heard it is one of the best majors to do. I still feel unsure what I want to do in my future

Hello, Paula !

Although there is some important information you didn't mention, I would like to give you some advice. Will you be getting your Associates degree in Graphic Design from Mt. San Antonio ? The Fall of 2025 is quite some time away. You said that you've "realized" that you want to switch your major to Business, yet you feel unsure what you want to do with your future. I am not really certain what you are asking, but it sounds like you will need to prepare yourself for some certainty since you're already in college and the financial investment should be worth your time and energy.

Because you "heard" that Business is one of the "best" majors, you are willing to give up on Graphic Design. A career choice needs much more than hearsay to determine if it is what you'd like to do. You need to switch over to a different major when you are certain and have been fully informed and have valid reasons for switching. You are free to switch your major any time, but you will need a lot of academic counseling about this. Obtain the procedures for switching majors from your college. What if you may hear that Computer Science is the best major ? You need to focus on your personal goals and plans for your future. Graphic Design and Business are two wonderful fields of study.

Consider continuing with Graphic Design and minoring in Business. The two blend well together. This way you can have the best of both worlds without your tuition cost for Graphic Design going by the wayside. Advice about when and how to switch majors and tuition reimbursement as well as exact information on how to do it is best received by the academic advisory office at your college.

You could also consider following through with your Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design, receive your Bachelors and than go for a Masters in Business. You can even do an online Master Degree for Business. My advice is to not switch majors, rather incorporate Business into what you're already doing by either having it as a minor or going for a Masters.

Your future career should be based on your drive, inspiration and strong love for the type of work and never be determined by what someone else says. If you take Business as a minor, that would also be a good way to confirm if you like it or not. Do not suddenly discount Graphic Design. You've already invested so much into it and probably went into it because you love it. No matter what you decide, the choice should come from you and you alone after considering many possibilities and the things you are willing to do.

Best wishes in making a great choice !

Business majors involve studying various aspects of business like management, marketing, finance, accounting, and more. It's a versatile major that can lead to a wide range of career paths in different industries, including graphic design. If you're unsure about your future, a business major can provide a solid foundation and open up many opportunities. It's worth exploring and considering if it aligns with your interests and goals. Don't hesitate to research, talk to professors and professionals, and gain practical experience to help you make an informed decision. Remember, your major doesn't necessarily determine your entire career trajectory!
