How will I know I've picked the right major to study in college?

I'm going to be heading to college this fall and I'm worried if I'll be able to pick the right major for me. Advisers always tell us that a lot of people go to college undecided, but I'm afraid I would be wasting time and money if I go undecided.

Julio’s Answer

Emily,
Your gut-feeling is right, undecided will cost you money, and precious time you could be getting valuable experiences. Look at yourself and ask what you enjoy the most, day to day, try a job serce, a temp agency, and try out different jobs, get experience. Then, ask yourself, can i do this for the rest of my life? Try a local trade school that offers job training, college debt is hurting so many people, and they have degrees in something they dont even work in! Or are happy with. Don't be one of those unhappy campers. There is always a job that matches what you enjoy most, and that is the pick.

Julio recommends the following next steps:

Start with a temp agency
Try different types of jobs
Look at a local trade school
Pick a job that brings you joy and satisfaction
Then college choice may make sense

Rachael’s Answer

Hi Emily, like Tracey said, really assess your strengths and preferences. I would also add that it is okay to go in to college undecided because your first 1-2 years are all about getting prerequisites out of the way (like math, reading, science, history) that are not major-specific. If you still want to go into college with a major decided, I would go for a major that can encompass many jobs, like marketing, finance, or communications.

Melissa’s Answer

To build off of what both Rachel and Tracy said, I would also suggest if you have any idea of what might interest you, you can audit a class. Basically, go and observe what they are learning, maybe even pull up the text book on amazon and review the first chapter. This way you have an idea of the work ahead of you and if it interests you or not.

Melissa recommends the following next steps:

Audit a class for a specific major that interests you.
Pull up textbooks for those classes online and review sections if available.

Congrats on taking a big step to attend college this fall. The best thing to do is assess what you like, your skills and strengths then research online to see what careers would match your strong points. college-major
