What is the potential to make connections for a future career at a private university verses a large public university?

I am a Junior at a St. Louis area high school looking at my options for colleges. To help me decide where to go if I am accepted I am looking for feedback regarding connections available at smaller private universities. I am a person who gets along with pretty much everyone and will have no issues making connections if they are available. #college #connections #private-school #public-school #stl #networking #college-bound

Tracy’s Answer

There is potential at any school to make connections. It's all about your willingness to put in the work of developing relationships with your professors and fellow students. If you are an introvert, smaller class sizes may be beneficial in creating an environment where you will thrive. Also, I would suggest looking at the university's career services department to learn how they support students and if they have a program that connects you to alum in your targeted industry.

Tracy recommends the following next steps:

Research class sizes
Research career services for students

Hi Jackson T.

Wherever you go, you can develop rapport with anyone. If you want to find your niche or your people to build a sense of community. I suggest observing what do you look like to do, what are your hobbies or interests? Another invitation is to read the mission statement values of the college, and the culture of college, this can provide you with insight on whether you want to be part of that environment. Its important to ask ourselves, are we going to be content and secured in this environment in order to grow and learn? I hope this suggestions can give you more things to reflect about before deciding where you want to go for school.

Simeon’s Answer

You shouldn't notice a radical difference in your ability to make connections between private and public universities. The only difference might be that your circles at private university will be smaller and more intimate versus the ones in public school in general. Even then, that's speaking in a generality. The only exception is if you find specific organizations that are just on your campus. In that case, there are some minor differences.
