Kate’s Answer

Being an artist is not always an easy or direct path, but if you have a voice and you don't use it you will find that you are always thinking about it. So, you may as well go for it! I find, as a creative person, we don't want thing to always move so linearly, anyway. Be ready to carve out your own route, sometimes this may involve your passion for art being done after your work day is done. It doesn't mean that it's not your career. Keep on making!

Initially starting out its very exiting and fun to grow and practice. As you get older though and try to branch out into being a professional overcoming constant failure and dwindling self worth becomes a risk.

James Constantine’s Answer

Hello Clary!

What is it like to be an Artist?

Being an artist is a unique and multifaceted experience that varies greatly from person to person. Artists often find themselves navigating a world of creativity, self-expression, and introspection. Here are some aspects that contribute to the experience of being an artist:

Creativity and Inspiration: Artists are constantly seeking inspiration and channeling their creativity into their work. This process can be both exhilarating and challenging, as they strive to bring their visions to life through various mediums such as painting, sculpture, music, or performance art.

Self-Expression: For many artists, creating art is a form of self-expression. It allows them to communicate their thoughts, emotions, and perspectives in a way that words alone cannot capture. Through their art, artists can share their unique voice with the world.

Freedom and Exploration: Being an artist often involves a sense of freedom and exploration. Artists have the opportunity to experiment with different techniques, styles, and themes, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of art. This sense of exploration can lead to personal growth and artistic development.

Challenges and Vulnerability: While being an artist can be incredibly rewarding, it also comes with its own set of challenges. Artists may face self-doubt, criticism, and financial instability as they pursue their passion. The act of creating art can also make artists feel vulnerable, as they expose a piece of themselves with each work they produce.

Community and Connection: Despite the solitary nature of creating art, many artists find a sense of community and connection within the artistic world. They may collaborate with other artists, participate in exhibitions or performances, and engage with audiences who appreciate their work. This sense of belonging can provide support and encouragement along their artistic journey.

In conclusion, being an artist is a complex and fulfilling experience that involves creativity, self-expression, freedom, challenges, vulnerability, community, and connection. It is a journey that allows individuals to explore their innermost thoughts and emotions while sharing their unique perspective with the world.

Benjamin’s Answer

It might start out a glamorous as it seems. You really have to commit yourself to your craft and be willing to sacrifice time to get better. You also have to apply yourself and find ways of making it in the industry. The road can be stressful, but it's always very rewarding to look at what you made and say to yourself, "wow I made that".

Cindy’s Answer

Hi Clary!

I love your simple yet insightful question.

Being an artist or a designer is like an energy flow of creativity from the heart to the brain of a person, the energy flow is so strong in the head that it has to put out to the world through any canvas, performances, acts, and media.

That's the true charm of being an artist.
This creative energy often strikes at the most unexpected times - perhaps in the middle of the night when we're about to drift off to sleep, or during a shower.

Then there's the need to sharpen the skills, such as sketching, sculpting, painting, acting, and dancing. These skills are our tools, our weapons, that help us thrive in the world of art. Once an artist has mastered these skills, they can showcase them to the world, trading their time and talent for money - this is what we call carving out a career path.

Most artists I know are incredibly passionate about their work. They pour their heart and soul into it so that others can appreciate and enjoy their creations. When their work is recognized, they often feel a sense of achievement, as if their hard work has finally paid off.

I hope this sheds more light on your question.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Clary !

What it is like to be an artist greatly depends on what type of artist you choose to be and where you will do your work. The one way I think would be the best way to find the answer to this question is for a person to begin doing the artwork of their choice. Think of some types of art such as painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, photography, digital, video, etc. . Music and performance are also considered art. Research things like blogs and videos to see various artists which will give you a visual and auditory idea of what it is like to be an artist.

Some qualities that artists share are a love for art, focused attention, long hours of dedication, a creative and flexible mind, strong motivation, and an awareness of the business end of being an artist in their particular niche. So it's hard to say what it is like to be "an artist" when there is an enormous, wide range of different types of artists and some artists do more than one form of art.

Something that can show you what it is like to be an artist would be to get involved. One way you can do this is to participate or attend the The Annual Kid's Art Festival where you live. I have left a link below for information about it. You can also take art classes the Albany Art Room. There are many videos on You Tube about artists talking about what it is like being an artist and you can discover these videos by searching on You Tube.

Most of all, it will be important to get many perspectives on what you have asked because no two artists' career are the same or have taken the same path. Being an artist comes with education, practice, experience and a passion for creating. So, in general, I hope that this was helpful and I wish you well on beginning to explore this career.
