I enjoy art but I'm not sure if I'd be able to find a job with a degree on it.

Hello, Isabella, there is a very nice art academy in San Francisco call Academy of Art University. You can give them your art projects picture to apply this school. The classes in this school you will learning vine charcoal pencil drawing, portrait, figure drawing, sculpture, 2 dimensions design, painting, animation…. If you want to become artist and find a job. The easy major is a fashion design.

It depends. Art school from my understanding is great for connections and if it's a good one, can really help your art. However, it's incredibly expensive and financial aid and scholarships might not be enough depending on where you are planning to go. It can also be hit or miss on whether or not the course are any good. My advice would be to look around, do your research and understand what is in your budget. Check around your state (if your in America) and see if you have any options there, trust me, it's a lot cheaper. If you have anyone who can help you that has been through the process of college in general, I would ask. If college isn't for you, then focus on building a strong portfolio and working on projects to make up for the lack of degree as well as building connections else where like a discord or something. It can be valuable, or a waste of money. Here is my list of pros and cons of attending an art school:
- Tuition fees could be expensive
- Might need to relocate/travel
+ Great networking opportunities, surrounded by creatives
+ Learn from professors and class critiques through a designed curriculum
+ (Depends on the school) Get access to professional tools and software
At the end of the day, an art career needs skills more than a degree, so if you cannot afford art school. It is not the end of the day. However, if you are attending, these are some ways to make the most out of art school:
> Have a clear goal, even if the goal is to find the goal. It is important to know what you want to be doing so you use the time to focus on the skills you need improvement. Even if you are not sure about what you want to do with art, make sure to spend your time figuring that out, exploring different disciplines.
> Pay attention to class & ask questions, listen to constructive feedback
> Make genuine friends and expand your network
> Create projects/Collaborate

No matter where you go though, the idea of community between you and your fellow artists is there.
Art resources online are plentiful, yet sometimes you can't beat the impact of having it taught in person by a professional in a classroom setting. You'll have peers to help better yourself and resources for how to improve your art even outside what you aim to study. (i.e I majored in Game Art at Champlain college. Although the major classes focused on game development, I took classes that focused in other artistic forms like UI design, motion graphics, and comic making.) The bad news about it is that art based industries are becoming insanely competitive, so expecting to land a job in your field right out the gate is a one in a million shot. I say this to not deter you, but to prepare you in terms of what to expect. I know first hand how hard finding an art related job can be in the modern world, but it shouldn't be a reason to stop pushing your artwork to be better.
Art school may not always be the first pick for creative individual, but if you want to wedge your foot in the door as a professional artist there's no harm in trying it out!
