Angela’s Career Stories

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge to overcome during my job search was gaining a professional image. I grew up in Philadelphia in a low-medium-income neighborhood and I had no prior experience with business professionals. As an accounting major, it was hard to get ahead without those business-world connections. I didn't know how to professionally write a resume, build my social media image, or even the difference between business casual or business professional. What helped me jump-start my career was a 1-credit Business Administration class that taught all of these basics. At the end of this class, I had a well-written resume, a LinkedIn profile, and I knew how to dress for certain meetings! Investing in myself as a professional gave me the confidence to network with others and get a feel for the business environment. There's always room for improvement, but I definitely feel that my Business Administration class along with networking has helped me become more successful and business-savvy.
