Hi Katie,
Real estate in an interesting field that helps connect people with the homes (sometimes a first time buyers, expanding families, downsizing for retirement, or even dream homes). As a result, it's important to know some things that are required going in. As a result, I recommend taking the required trainings/exams and become certified. I also recommend getting a mentor to help through this process (which is part of the list below: To Become A Real Estate Agent). I've added a link to a quick article that can provide some insight as well: https://www.theceshop.com/louisiana/pre-licensing/how-to-become-real-estate-agent-louisiana. You can also read this short article on how to get a real estate mentor here: www.nomadicrealestate.com/how-to-find-a-real-estate-mentor/
But even before that, I recommend reaching out to a local real estate agency to see if you can:
1. Ask questions (interview the agent)
2. Shadow the agent to see what a day in the life of real estate (to see if this is something you truly like)
3. See if you can volunteer with the agent (post fliers, help stage homes, etc.)

To become a real estate agent after high school, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you accomplish your goal:
1. **Research Your State’s Requirements**: Each state has different licensing requirements, so make sure you know what’s needed in your area. Typically, you'll need to complete a set number of hours of coursework, pass an exam, and meet other qualifications.
2. **Take a Real Estate Pre-Licensing Course**: This course covers topics like real estate law, ethics, and the local housing market. Many states offer online courses, so you can complete them at your own pace.
3. **Pass the Real Estate Exam**: After completing the required coursework, you'll need to pass the real estate licensing exam. It’s a good idea to take practice exams and study the material thoroughly to increase your chances of success.
4. **Apply for Your License**: Once you’ve passed the exam, submit an application for your real estate license with your state’s real estate board. This process can take a few weeks.
5. **Find a Brokerage**: Most states require you to work under a licensed broker when you first start your real estate career. Look for a reputable brokerage that offers training and support for new agents.
6. **Start Networking**: Building relationships with clients and other professionals in the industry, like mortgage brokers and contractors, is key to growing your career. Join local real estate organizations and attend networking events.
7. **Build Your Online Presence**: Use social media, create a website, and stay active in your local community to promote your real estate services.
You could also consider getting an internship or part-time job at a real estate office to gain experience before you get licensed.

Katie,
You've received some great advice, and I'd love to add mine to the mix.
Sales can be an exciting journey. I've spent my life in sales and management, and it was both rewarding and fulfilling. Here's my secret to becoming an outstanding salesperson.
Trust is essential. People won't buy from someone they don't trust. So, here's how you can build that trust.
When you meet a client who wants to buy a house, resist the urge to immediately dive into property details. Many agents do this, thinking more talk equals more sales. But without trust, it falls flat. Avoid this pitfall.
Instead, when you meet a new client, start by introducing yourself and offering a sincere compliment. Notice if the wife has a stunning ring or if they’ve brought their children. Say something like, "What a beautiful ring, he must really love you," or "Your children are lovely, you have a beautiful family."
Then, engage them with thoughtful questions. Ask where they're originally from and respond with something positive, like, "I've heard that's a beautiful place."
Share a bit about yourself, too. Spend about five to fifteen minutes building this connection. By the end, you'll have their trust and possibly two new friends. Remember, buying a house is a big decision, so take your time.
Finally, ask them, "How can I help you both?"
Follow these steps, and you'll shine as a real estate agent!
