Johnny’s Answer

Great question. There is no best way. As you grow it changes. When I first launched my private chef business I advertised in local finer thing magazine. The folks reading were all my clients. I learned valuable lessons.

1. Takes about 6 times advertising to see a very small percent of business or calls.
2. You have to stay on message. Straight to the point.
3. Six to twelve months which is an obvious investment I started to get a few calls. Spent a lot of money for really little action

Took step back. I had built a social media business following. Facebook became my second advertising platform. To my shock it had incredible responses

I set my ads to meet certain criteria’s. I tried different types of how I wanted to get clicks. I found advertising to those likely to respond to be incredible. I also did more website visits and kept trying them all

I found my ads where I spent as little as $8 a day brought me up to five bookings. Never did I see better results. Magazine was $400 month and never came close to Facebook

Then I joined local groups that allowed me to mention my business. These FB pages charged nothing.

My reputation started building and I was receiving all five star ratings. This brought me a great bunch of referrals. That was very humbling

Today two years later I don’t advertise. I am too busy to do so. I’m either referred or found on my business Facebook page chefCarino

Hope this helps best success

Hello, Chloe!

There are many ways to advertise a business! This includes billboards, radio ads, and newspaper ads! In my opinion, the best way to reach people is with social media. I would create social media accounts for your business on the major social media websites. Keep it constant and word will spread
Note: TikTok videos can get a lot of views! I would try that!

Word of mouth is also another good way to spread your business. Try to get your family and friends to spread the news for you!

I hope this information has helped you! Good luck on your business, Chloe!

Ismael R.’s Answer

Hi Chloe!
The beautiful part about advertising is there are no limits. With the internet and data, you can better understand who your audience is. The effectiveness of advertising is predicated on how well you know your audience and your ability to tell the story of your brand or business.

You can start with basic information like age, interests, geographic (where do they live), and behavioral (what social media platforms do they utilize, websites etc.). This will give you a baseline of who they are exactly and where to find them. But the key question here is, well how do I start identifying who to pull this information from? Well it starts by assessing who is proximity to you, friends, family, and classmates. Leverage your own network as a starting point as you continue to build up a list of potential customers. From here you can leverage their networks in a snowball effect fashion.

Now you have a starting point. Yay. Now craft your brand/business story. Understand how it relates to your target audience. Think about the specifics, for example, what problem you're solving or how is your brand/business making their life more enjoyable? These questions will inform the approach to the story for relevancy. The more relevant the story is, the more prone audience members are to spread word-of-mouth about their interaction and/or experience of your business/brand. Something else to keep front of mind, how does this business/brand represent you? Answering this question will help you from a consumer perspective as audiences want to feel connected to businesses/brands they support.

Hopefully this helps Chloe. You got this! I already l know it.

Jennifer’s Answer

Hi Chloe!

When we opened our restaurant in 2017 we used social media before we were even able to open our doors. This helped in SO many ways:

1. We were able to hype up our business and get likes and followers before we opened the doors.
2. People were very interested in the preparations (ie we posted pictures of our buildout and some sample menu items.
3. Small Gift Card giveaways go very far in getting the word out. You can do a contest where people tag friends for an entry or ask what people would like to see on the menu. People love to be engaged!

Start small to work out kinks. We did a week of small openings with friends and family to test dishes, service etc. We asked for honest feedback from people we trusted. Once we had a few practice runs we opened the flood gates and many of the people that had been following us on social media came out within the first few weeks and went back on our feeds to talk about their experiences.

Good luck in your future endeavors!

There are so many cool ways to advertise your business - either traditional kind or digital kind. but first you must start with what you have - giving trial products and services, seeking for referrals, and building your community. When you launch your advert, people can easily identify you.

Good Luck.

Lindsey’s Answer

There are many different steps to advertising a business. Which ones you take depend on your business, budget, size, and what you hope to accomplish from advertising. A global software company would advertise their product very differently from a small local bakery, as one example.

The first step is market research. Start by deciding who your target audience is. From there, complete some research to figure out what they like and where they interact with brands, both online and offline. Google searches can be a good start for anyone with a low budget. This research will help you decide which online and offline advertising channels you should look into.

As a very first step for those who are starting small and don't have a large budget, trying out one or two social channels that are appropriate for your audience can be a good start to getting the word about your product or service out there.

As a business grows, investing in paid ads, websites, and other more sophisticated forms of advertising may be important to get the company in front of more eyes.

If you are starting a business, good luck! I wish you much success.

Lindsey

Lindsey recommends the following next steps:

Take free or paid marketing and advertising courses or certificates online to get inspiration for more advertising strategies.
Complete a business degree to learn more about running a business and the marketing it involves.
Complete an MBA to further your studies.
Hire a freelance marketer or a similar professional to help you advertise your business once you have the money and resources to do so.

Kathy’s Answer

Chloe,

Social Media seems to be the primary source most small business advertisements. Word of month is always the best. Need to make sure that every interaction with your business is great experience and this is free advertisement. Bad experience is negative advertisement for the company as people tend to share more about bad experience than a good experience.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Chloe !

I have some advice for you which you may find additionally fun and advantageous.

My first suggestion is for you to create a brochure for your service or business ! There are websites that help you create brochures or you can design it on your own. Once you have the brochures, distribute them at places that are related to your business (not the same business). I found a top notch plumber from a flyer I picked up at the natural food store !

The second thing is to participate in Fairs and Bazars put on in and around your town. There are Health Fairs, Holiday Fairs, County and State Fair, all types of venues for you to have a booth selling your product or demonstrating your service. I can't tell you how often and long I have been a customer by meeting the business owner at a fair. It always seems like it has a special touch meeting the owners in person.

I actually do not advise social media because it's not business focused, there are risks and it's only useful if people already know you and want information about location, hours, etc. But I would advise Linked In because it is focused on professionals and you can post things about your business and follow companies related to your business.

The next thing I would advise would be to list your business in Directories online. For example, if you had a handmade soap business, you would go to the Soapmakers Guild and post information about your business and a photo of your products. If you were a Life Coach, you would list yourself on the Life Coach Directories. These are some online professional directories to consider: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Bing Places for Business, Yellow Pages, Manta, EZlocal, Better Business Bureau, Foursquare, LinkedIn Company Pages, and you can search for more focused directories based on what your business is about.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

Mehwish’s Answer

Hi Chloe,
Let me tell you a fact, starting a business is an exciting step, and spreading the word effectively is very important. However, in today’s digital world, using online tools like digital marketing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can help you reach more people. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Create a Website
2. Use Social Media
3. Google My Business
4. Start a Blog
5. Collaborate with Others
6. Email Marketing
7. Track Your Results

Mehwish recommends the following next steps:

1. Create a Website A website is your online home. Make it easy to use, look good, and work well on phones and computers. Use keywords (the words people search for online) in your website to help it show up on Google. For example, if you sell handmade candles, use terms like “handmade candles” or “eco-friendly candles.”
2. Use Social Media Find the platforms your customers use most, like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. Post regularly with pictures, videos, and helpful tips. Share updates about your business to keep people interested. Use paid ads on social media to reach more people. For example, you can show your ad to people who live in your area or are interested in what you offer.
3. Google My Business If you have a local business, set up a profile on Google My Business. This helps people find you when they search for businesses nearby. Ask happy customers to leave reviews. Good reviews make your business look trustworthy.
4. Start a Blog Write articles or tips about your business or industry. For example, if you sell fitness gear, share workout tips. Blogs help people find your website when they search for information online.
6. Email Marketing Build an email list by offering something valuable, like a discount or free tips, in exchange for their email address. Use emails to share updates, sales, and helpful information with your audience.

Z’s Answer

Hi Chloe,

As other have said, social media can be incredibly effective for small business advertising. Depending on the demographic you're trying to target facebook, instagram, tiktok are all great starting points. You can run smaller test campaigns to gauge effectiveness between your messaging first before spending a ton on advertising. Additionally, depending on what your business is / the products you're selling, local farmer's markets / fairs usually have booths for small businesses to showcase themselves as well.

Good luck!
