NASA OSTEM MARKETING INTERNSHIPS
• NO COST. Interns may receive a stipend based on academic level and session length.
• ELIGIBILITY: Internships are available for full-time high school students who meet a minimum 3.0 GPA requirement and are US citizens.

Thanks for the question.
There are many different definitions of "Marketing." Creating logos and packaging for goods and services is part of marketing. Ad placement on various media such as TV, radio, print, billboards and digital marketing online is part of marketing. Then there's event marketing for concerts, sporting events and community involvement. When I represented an advertising agency we would schedule a "discovery" meeting with a new client to discuss the goals for their business. Once we understood their target audience, the available budget and what they were trying to accomplish we would put together a marketing plan to achieve their objectives. The budget determines everything; if they have an unlimited budget then we would allocate specific amounts of spending on a variety of media that we determined would best deliver the "reach" and "frequency" to their target audience. If the budget is limited we may try to dominate only one media choice as the budget allows.

But to answer your question more specifically, study digital, it is an ever changing medium and it is the future. Learn all you can about SEO, website design, analytics, video etc... Intern at an advertising agency if possible. An ad agency represents all media and chooses the media that works best for the client and they will craft an overall marketing strategy. Where as a media representative will typically sell the products and services that they offer, which is not always the best option. Don't automatically discount radio advertising, sure audiences are smaller but radio can deliver frequency, they can create community events and support it with no charge on air promo's. Marketing is all about communication, so I would recommend you join a creative writing club and a club where you can learn public speaking. Learning how to clearly and concisely articulate your thoughts is key in a marketing role. And, public speaking is a great way to learn how to deliver your message, and how to discern if it is received the way you expect.

You can think about traditional vs unconventional/innovative extracurriculars

Traditional - marketing/ advertising internships, marketing club (either provided in your school/uni/college), national marketing clubs. Think "working with larger organizations."

Unconventional/ innovative: These are able to show your personal interests within marketing/advertising.
- you can start a platform dissecting different marketing campaigns in industries you're interested in: for example, Maybelline mascara marketing in different global regions- how is the company changing their marketing tactic to reach different demographics? how is Maybelline's marketing strategy compares to ELF, Summer Fridays, Sephora, etc.?
- create a social media following/plan for a local small business (maybe a new coffee shop just opened around the corner and you can help curate an online presence for them)
