Today, the obvious answer is AI skills. Learn about AI by taking a good overview course (available online through many Universities and Companies). Check out IBM Skillsbuild.
Play with ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, etc. Learn how to use them and practice prompting and conversing with them.
In the future, Quantum computing will rise and be a hot topic (its already almost here).

AI is a pretty obvious response here because it is going to impact all of us in the upcoming years. We have such an accelerated rate of information and building the skills early will help you become a leader as roles evolve. BUT I think being an intentional learner is the key here- investing in your continuing education (AI or ANY other skill) and continuing to read, listen to podcasts, get hands on, and earn certifications will set you apart as an IT professional.

I agree with the previous answers. Before diving into AI/ML or cloud technologies, it's important to get comfortable with the basics. Focus on:
- Data Structures and Algorithms
- Object-Oriented and Functional Programming
- Client Service Computing
- Distributed Computing
- Enterprise Software Architecture
- Different Software Development Lifecycles, including their pros and cons
- Basics of Statistics, Probability, and Number Theory
By mastering these areas, you'll become a skilled computer science engineer who is always in demand. Once you have a strong foundation, you can explore specialized fields like AI/ML and Cloud with confidence.

Hi Christina,
Definitely, everything related to AI/ML, and specifically Generative AI is in great demand today (Python, Prompt Engineering, Agentic AI), and also Cloud computing literacy is very important, leaning to use any of the "big 3" (AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure) as many of the AI modeling training and production is done in Cloud services at many companies.
The AI trend will only accelerate in the future so making the decision now to learn AI will help a lot with your career prospects in the future.

You need to adjust to the new IT era and find ways to stand out in the market. Don't just focus on IT tasks. Look at how IT, often seen as a cost, can actually help achieve company goals through simplicity, security, and automation. I can't share files here, but contact me on LinkedIn, and I'll send you a presentation I use at events.
