What else can I do to strengthen my resume if I don't have much volunteering or shadowing experience for nursing school?

I am currently a freshman in college looking to apply to nursing school, and I feel like I am put at a disadvantage beacuse a lot of people go out their way to volunteer or shadow. I didn't know this was something I wanted to do until more recently.

I didn't have volunteer or shadow experience when I was accepted into nursing school. What I did have was excellent grades and several college credits already completed. Have you applied to nursing school and been told that volunteer/shadow experience is needed for your resume? If so, it's never too late! You can volunteer in your community or online (like with CareerVillage.org!). To shadow you can contact hiring managers (or sometimes it's the volunteer coordinators) at local medical businesses and ask what you'd need to do to shadow a nurse for a day. This will also give you some insight into the type of nursing you'd like to get into once you graduate.

Good luck!!

Hey Kayla! It’s totally okay to be just getting started! What matters most now is what you do moving forward. To strengthen your resume, look for opportunities on campus or in your community like joining pre-nursing or health-related clubs, getting CPR certified, or working part-time in a healthcare setting, even as a receptionist or assistant. You can also look into short-term volunteer events or virtual shadowing experiences to start building that exposure. Highlight your coursework, GPA, and any personal experiences that show your commitment, empathy, and communication skills. Nursing schools understand everyone’s path is different, and showing growth and initiative now can be just as powerful as years of experience. Good luck!
